Chapter 1 - Introduction
The Nomus Gateway i IFC – G.703 to V.35 interface converter is a useful accessory for
the Nomus Gateway i BB Base Band modems or Gateway i 2M SHDSL modems. It
allows a synchronous device like a Router or a Multiplexer to directly communicate over
a PCM network. Gateway i IFC is ideally used when the synchronous device is situated
within a few hundred meters from the PCM equipment, typically within the telephone
exchange premises. In other words, it replaces a pair of V.35 and G.703 modems and a
leased line.
The Gateway i IFC is available in 2 variations:
• 2 Mbps (nx64) G.703 Interface, Model : Gateway i /IFC/2M or
• 64 Kbps co-directional G.703 Interface, Model : Gateway i /IFC/64K
The Gateway i IFC is connected to a synchronous device with the V.35/RS530/RS232
interface on one side and the PCM network with the G.703 interface on the other side.
It converts the data received from the G.703 interface into data and clock and sends it
to the V.35/RS530/RS232 interface. Similarly, it formats the data and clock from the
synchronous device for transmission onto the G.703 network.

Chapter 2 – Installation
2.1 Unpacking
Check for accessories as per the checklist pasted on the modem packing box. Do not
dispose the box in case user need to store the modem or ship it in the future. The box
should contain the following items.
• Gateway i IFC (64K or 2M)
• Cables:
A Rosette Box “G.703/E1” with “64K/2M G.703” cable
• Power Cord (AC, DC also included if ordered Dual power)
• User Manual CD.
2.2 Safety Requirements
The circuit boards used in the modems consist of the components that have a low
current consumption. On the other hand they are extremely sensitive to the electrostatic
discharge and should be handled with care. To prevent damage to the electronics
components of the modem, it is advisable to ensure an optimal electrical contact
between yourself, the working area and a safety ground before touching any circuit
board. Take special care not to touch any component or connector on the circuit board.
Do not open the modem unless absolutely necessary.
2.3 Site Selection
Though the modems function in a temperature range of 0°C to +50°C and in humidity
upto 95%, a location should be preferably chosen as follows:
• Install the modem in an area free of extreme temperatures, humidity,
shock and vibration. Operation at low temperature prolongs the service
life and MTBF.
Gateway i IFC User Manual Page – 4
• Always place the modem on its feet without blocking the air vents of the
modem. Do not stack multiple units directly onto each other, as stacking
can cause heat build-up that could damage the equipment.
• Do not place it near other equipment that can emit strong electromagnetic
radiation, e.g. Transformers, power rectifiers etc.
• Position it so that user can easily see and access the front panel and its
control indicators. Leave enough clearance at the back for cables and
wires.

Chapter 4 – Maintenance & Troubleshooting
4.1 Diagnostic Tests
The Gateway i IFCs are equipped with the following diagnostic tests capability:
• Local loopback test
• Digital loopback test
• Remote loopback test
4.1.1 Local Loopback Test
This test is used to loopback the data received on the V.35 interface of the Local IFC.
Once the local loopback test is initiated, an external Bit Error Rate Tester (BERT) can
be used to send a test pattern and check the received (loopback) data for errors.

1. To initiate the Local loopback test, turn ON the power switch of the IFC.
2. Press the LL1 switch, TST LED will become On indicating that Local loop
is initiated.
3. When the test pattern of the BERT is turned ON, it will receive back the
transmitted data, and measure the BER.
4. This test indicates that the Data from the BERT is looped back locally to
the BERT and thus the performance of the Local IFC can be observed.
Gateway i IFC User Manual Page – 15
If the DTE is connected with the IFC, this test checks the satisfactory working of the
Local V.35 interface, the DTE and the connection between them as shown in Figure
4.1.1.
4.1.2 Digital Loopback Test
This test is used to loopback the data received on the G.703 interface of the Local IFC
as shown in Figure 4.1.2. Once the digital loopback test is initiated, a BERT can be
connected to the G.703 interface of the IFC to send a test pattern and check the
received (loopback) data for errors.
Figure 4.1.2 – Digital Loopback
1. Make the power connections.
2. The BERT is to be connected to the G.703 interface of the IFC.
3. To initiate the test, press the DL1 switch once on the front panel. TST
LED will become On.
4. When the test pattern of the BERT is turned On, it will receive back the
transmitted data, and measure the BER.
4.1.3 Remote Loopback Test (Only for Gateway i IFC/64K)
This test is useful when to IFCs are connected as shown in Figure 4.1.3. The test is
initiated by the Local IFC and is used to loopback the data received by the Remote IFC
on the G.703 interface back to the Local modem. Once the remote loopback test is
initiated, a BERT can be connected to the Local modem to send a test pattern and
Gateway i IFC User Manual Page – 16
check the received (loopback) data for errors. With this test, one can verify the G.703
interface of local IFC, remote IFC and the PCM Network.
Figure 4.1.3 – Remote Loopback
1. Make the power connections and the G.703 interface connection of the
Local and Remote IFCs. Ensure both modems are synced up as indicated

3. To initiate the test, press the RL1 switch once on the front panel. TST
LED on Local IFC will come On and TST LED on Remote modem will
blink.
4. When the test pattern of the BERT is turned On, it will receive back the
transmitted data, and measure the BER.
4.1.4 Bit Error Rate Test
The Gateway IFC has an in-built test pattern generator, which complies with V.52
standard (511 test pattern), and is very helpful for diagnosing the circuits. This feature
can be selected by pressing the TP1 switch on the front panel. The TST led will turn On
indicating that TP has been selected. When TP1 is pressed, the IFC will generate the
511 pattern and transmit it on the G.703 interface. Simultaneously, it will check the
received data for the 511 pattern. If 511 pattern is not received, the TST led will blink. If
511 pattern is received without errors, the TST led will remain ON. If 511 pattern is
received with errors, the TST led will BLINK whenever errors are detected.
If two IFCs, connected as per Figure 4.1.3, are under test then turn On the TP on both
the IFCs and the status of errors can be seen on TST led.
Gateway i IFC User Manual Page – 17
Alternately, turn On the TP1 on the local IFC and turn On DL1 on remote IFC or turn On
RL on the local IFC and the status of errors can be seen on TST led.
1. Make the power connections and the G.703 interface connection of the
Local and Remote IFCs. Ensure both modems are synced up as indicated
by the SYN LED.
2. Loop the data at the remote side, by pressing the RL1 switch at the local
side or the DL Switch on the remote side.
3. Press the TP1 Switch of the local IFC, TST LED on the front panel will be
on. Observe the status of the TST LED.
4. Alternately, press the TST Switch of both the local and remote IFCs, and
observe the status of TST LED on both modems.
