MGMT2010 BUSINESS ETHICS AND THE INDIVIDUAL

SPRING SEMESTER 2020

Instructor: Dr. Madeline Ong
Title: Assistant Professor of Management
Email: [email protected]
Office: LSK 5043
Instructional Assistant: Becky Tsui ([email protected])
Class Meeting: L1 Wednesday 9:00AM – 10:50AM at LSK 1007
L2 Wednesday 1:30PM – 3:20PM at LSK 1034

COURSE DESCRIPTION
In this day and age, it is no longer sufficient for managers and leaders in organizations to be simply
transactional or simply transformational. They also need to be fair, just, ethical, moral and
responsible. This course is designed to explore, inform, and stimulate thinking on issues related to
behavioral ethics and responsibility as encountered in the corporate world. To create this intellectual
exchange, this course will focus on how individual and organizational behavior is shaped by context
as well as by biases, why these factors make it difficult for managers to be responsible leaders, and
what can be done about the influence of these factors.

This course will also challenge you to develop your higher-level critical thinking skills, through
lectures, discussions, and personal reflections. Ultimately, this course should help you to strengthen
your own professional judgments when confronting ethical issues in life.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
The University: HKUST wants all graduates to have certain desired attributes. One of these relates
directly to ethics. Specifically, HKUST wants all graduates to have:
• ‘respect for others and high standards of personal integrity’
• ‘compassion and a readiness to contribute to the community’
(ABC LIVE Attributes of HKUST Graduates)

The Department: The Department of Management also has specific goals, including one relating to
ethics. Specifically, the Department of Management wants graduates to:
• ‘understand their professional and ethical responsibility’
(SBM Learning Goals and Objectives, LG:8)

This Course: The Intended Learning Outcomes of this course have therefore been aligned with the
ethical goals of the Department and the University. Thus, upon completion of this course, you will
“understand your professional and ethical responsibility” (LG:8) by reaching the following
objectives:
• Knowledge. Understand terminology, concepts, and principles of ethical decision making.
• Skills. Identify ethical dilemma in business and apply logical frameworks in your analysis in
order to reach feasible resolutions.
• Attitude. Appreciate the importance of behaving ethically in society.

CLASS PARTICIPATION

Class participation is an important element of this course (25%). Learning depends heavily upon
active participation. The primary emphasis should be on quality participation, as reflected in
thoughtful reflection and clear concise comments. Students are required to actively participate in the
class discussions regardless of whether they take place on Zoom or face-to-face. Class attendance
will also count toward your participation grade.

REFLECTION SURVEYS

Reflection surveys (10%) involve answering online questionnaires about your experience during this
course. There are 3 reflection surveys that students will respond to throughout this course. Each
survey should take 10-15 minutes.

GROUP PROJECT

In many industries, businesses contribute to the worsening of environmental and social problems,
such as climate change, wasteful consumption, discrimination, poverty, inequality, and exploitation.
For the group project (25%), each group will give a presentation on their chosen issue. You should
focus on an issue within a specific industry in Asia (e.g., gender discrimination in the IT industry in
Asia, workplace safety in the garment industry in Asia). Use the internet and library resources to do
your research. Each team will present their analysis in a class presentation on Week 11 or 12.

Please send me an email at the end of Week 6 with the topic you wish to study. Please submit a copy
of your presentation slides on the day of the presentation at the beginning of class. There is no
written report required for this group project.

INDIVIDUAL ASSESSMENT

There are two main components for the individual assessment. The Personal Reflection Essay (15%)
involves writing a 800-word essay on your main takeaways from this course. The Integrated Test
(25%) will take place on the last day of class. It will consist of questions testing your mastery of major
concepts and theories discussed in the class.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

Academic integrity is a critical value of the university community. You are expected to uphold the
HKUST Academic Honor Code (http://www.ust.edu.hk/vpaao/integrity/honor.html) and show the
highest level of integrity in your work. Cheating – copying other people’s work without proper
citation and acknowledgement, allowing others to copy your work, and any other form of academic
dishonesty are not tolerated.
