Response Paper on A Journal titled “Children’s Literature In Empowering

Children Character Building”

Introduction

This paper written as a response to a journal titled “Children’s Literature In

Empowering Children Character Building” written by Syahrudi Junaid. This journal
aimed to reveal that literature plays an important rules in children’s character
development. Literature plays an important role in our lives and character
development (Junaid, 2017: 109). In children literature, children can involve various
aspect of life such as understand about their environment, their family, their society,
distant people, and even the world by understanding a character in a story. Literature
can give a lot of benefit for children, not only giving the pleasure and enjoyment but
also learn more about many things.

To build a good children’s character, parents need to choose and control their
reading because literature can influence children in many things, one of them is
influencing children’s character development. In read a story, children can imitate
anything from what they have seen, sometimes children can imitate character that is
not exist in the story such as violence. To avoid this, parents need to control their
reading.
Body

Childhood is crucial stage of someone’s life because they response to what

ever they read, so the parents should give their children good literary base because
literature can influence children’s character development then they will be able to
gain the knowledge from that. Literature can influence student’s character such as
make them realize traits such as respect, honesty, courage, and kindness that taken as
the representation of the real world around them (Almerico. 2014. “Building
Character Through Literacy With Children’s Literature. Page 3). By reading literary
book, children can respect themselves and others because literary book usually reflect
the diverse group.

The ideas in the article state that the focused in children literature are different
from literature that aimed for adult. I do agree with this idea because children more
like the picture book rather than the text. For children, one of the point they like a
book is the book’s cover. When the cover is kind of eye-catching like animal’s
picture, children will disposed to choose that. The most favorite genre in children
literature is picture book. Picture book introduce and explain the world to children in
an extensive way before they able read and contains more pictures than words (Hana
Hladikova. 2014. “Children’s Book Illustrations: Visual Language of Picture Books”.
Page 20). For children, picture can make them more understand rather than text, that
is why they interested more in picture book than text.

Literature can stimulates children’s imagination and sharpen their awareness

of the world around them. There are two kind of literature: [1] oral literature ( verbal
art that delivered orally from person to person and generation to generation) [2]
written literature (written literature such as novel, short story, etc) (S Jayasrinivasa
Rao. 2018. Oral Literature and Written Literature. Page 17). Children live
surrounded by literature. In my own experiences, I can relate that when my mother
tell my sister a story before she sleep. The story that have told have certain educating
elements because every oral literature and written literature have moral message in it.
This is one of the variety of things and activities in children literature that aimed to
plants, nurture and develop value by literature.

Literature contains the experience and values of life, so by reading a literary

work, readers can find the issues of life, various human character, creativity,
innovation, etc. For instance, when read the story of Malin Kundang children would
be able to know various human character, when read The Dot children will be able to
know how to express themselves and reach their dream. Children will imitate the
repeated process surrounding their environment, so the cognitive and social factor
plays important rules in learning. This is one of the relation between literature and the
development of children character.

In my opinion, the way this journal written are persuasive especially for
parents who want to give their children literary base by giving them positive books to
read. Choosing positive things to read for children development is important. There is
an important role for parents in the development and educational performance of their
children (The University of Melbourne. “Reading to Young Children: A Head- Start
in Life”. Page 5). The guide from the parents can lead the children find good reading
for them.

Conclusion

Literature plays an important rules in children character development. Children can

learn about abstract concept of character education by understanding a character’s
moral knowing, moral feeling, and moral action. The children’s literature book
should represent various setting, problem solving, theme, so this will provide
opportunities for children in considering more perspective and values in a story.
Choosing positive books for children is important for children’s character
development. If a child read about multicultural children’s book, they will be able to
understand and respect others.
