Solving QE (Factoring)

1) The document outlines a lesson plan to teach students how to solve quadratic equations by factoring. 2) The lesson includes pre-activities to motivate students and assess prior knowledge, a presentation on solving quadratic equations by factoring, and a discussion with examples of the procedure. 3) Students will then practice applying the procedure through example problems and an assessment involving solving quadratic equations by extracting square roots.

I.

LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
At the end of the class, 100% of the students should be able to learn 75% of the lesson and be
able to:
 solve quadratic equations by factoring;
 write quadratic equation with given roots;
 illustrate the given situation using a diagram that would represent the different
measures of quantities involved;
 develop students’ understanding in factoring through real-life situation.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

Subject : Mathematics 9
Topic : SOLVING QUADRATIC EQUATION BY FACTORING
Reference : Mathematics 9 – Learners Material, pages 27 – 34, Internet
Materials : PowerPoint Presentation, chalk and board, activity sheet

III. LESSON PROCEDURE:

A. Pre-activities (10 mins)
1. Daily Activities
a. Prayer
b. Checking of Attendance
c. Collecting of Assignments

2. Motivation
Pre-Assessment: Introduce students to the important new vocabulary. Also
reactivate prior factoring knowledge by giving examples as warm-
up. This pre-assessment is already studied in Grade 8
Mathematics.
Direction: Factor each of the following polynomials.
1. 2 x2 −8 x
2. −3 s 2 +9 s
3. 4 x+20 x 2
4. 5 t−10 t 2
5. s2 +8 s+12

B. Presentation: (2 mins)
1. Present the topic in which students with an opportunity to think of a way to find
the measures of unknown quantities using the equation formulated.

C. Discussion: (30 mins)

1. The teacher gives the following procedure to be able to solve quadratic euations.
a. Transform the quadratic equation into standard form if necessary.
b. Factor the quadratic equations.
c. Apply the zero product property by setting each factor of the quadratic
equations
ZERO PRODUCT PROPERTY
If the product of two real numbers is zero, then either of the two is equal
to zero or both numbers are equal to zero.
4. Solve each resulting equation.
5. Check the values of the variable obtained by substituting each in the original
equation.
Examples:
1. Find the solutions of x 2+ 9 x=−8 by factoring
2. Solve 9 x 2−4=0 by factoring
3. x 2−14=5 x

C. Generalization: (2 mins)
Ask the students once again to enumerate the procedure in finding the roots or
solution of a standard quadratic equation by factoring.

D. Application: (10 mins)

BOARD WORK: Extract Me!
1. x 2=16
2. t 2−81=0
3. 2 s 2=50

IV. ASSESSMENT: (30 mins)

Title: Extract Then Describe ME!
Direction: Solve each of the following equations by extracting square roots.
1. 3 t 2=12
2. 4 x2 −225=0
3. 3 h2−147=0
4. x 2=150
2 9
5. x =
16
6. ( s−4 )2−81=0
7. ( 2 k−1 )2 =225

V. ASSIGNMENT:
Notebook:
Give at least 3 quadratic equations which can be solved by extracting the square roots, then
solve.
