The alibi

“The alibi” is a story about the murder of a young lady named Hae Min Lee, and how this sadly

event affected her former boyfriend named Adnan Syed. The journalist, Sara Koenig, tells the

story from her own point of view, while she tries to be objective at the same time. Technically,

Adnan was the main suspect of the murder due to a confession of one guy he knew, named Jay.

Jay told the investigators that Adnan had been acting in a strange way after his girlfriend broke

up him. Then, Adnan mentioned him that he wanted to kill her because of that. When Adnan is

examined by police officers, he was not able to recall with accuracy where he was or what he

was doing on the day of the murder, because it was a common day for him, so that, he did not

have an alibi to support his own innocence, and then, he went to prison. In spite of that, one

young girl named Asia McLain, was very sure she saw him at the library the day and the time the

murder was performed. Finally, after many years in prison, this testimony seems not to be

relevant for Adnan, who is resigned to his fate in jail.

The breakup

In this episode, Sara Koenig tells about Hae and Adnan’s relationship. One of the arguments of

the prosecutor was that Adnan murdered Hae as a revenge due to she broke up with him. During

the interviews performed to many of their close friends, any of them declared they have seen

Adnan extremely affected by the breakup. All of them said that it was a normal event for him, of

course he was sad but not obsessed. On the other hand, when Sara read the personal Hae’s

journal, she did not find convincing evidence written by Hae about Adnan’s hard feelings
towards her or her current boyfriend, named Don. Everything seems to indicate that Adnan was

an innocent victim of the prosecutor’s argument. However, an interesting contradiction appears

at the end of the episode, a first statement made by Adnan to the police officers in which he said

that he was waiting for her at the parking lot because he asked her to ride him to his home, and a

second statement in which he declared he drove his own car to get home. Is this a mistake made

by his lack of memory? Or, Is Adnan lying?.

Leakin Park

The story took an unsuspected twist, a guy, who Sara Koenig named Mr. S., told the detectives

of the case something about the location of Hae’s corpse. However, the way in which Mr. S.

found her was a riddle. According to the statements made by Mr. S. to the police officers, he

found out the corpse by mere chance. During the morning, while he drove his car, he had the

urge to urinate, so that he stopped it in Leakin Park, in the middle of the main road. He walked

into the forest and suddenly he realized about the corpse. Nevertheless, Sara Koenig went to

Leakin Park to verify his story, and when she was in the exact location described by Mr. S., she

noticed that it was so far from the highway. Then, she thought that if he really had the urge to

urinate there was no reason to be far away from his vehicle. This event became Mr. S. a new

suspect of Hae Min Lee’s murder. The detectives investigated him, and they found out he was a

streaker. Finally, his younger brother told Sara that he thought Mr. S. found out the corpse while

he was running naked in the forest.
