EEC 319: ENGINEER IN THE SOCIETY

LECTURE
1.0 VARIOUS ENGINEERING DISCIPLINE
Engineering is a very wide field that virtually covers the whole span of human
existence. There is hardly any discipline that is not directly or remotely linked to
an aspect of engineering discipline.

Q1.1: Can we discuss how Engineering is directly or remotely connected to the

following?

 Medical Practitioners
 The teaching profession
 Scientists

Q1.2: Can you think of any discipline or aspect of our existence that is not in any
way connected to engineering?
Of course, while it appears easier to connect engineering profession to the
building, automobile etc discipline, it can be seen that it actually cut across all
facets of our life. Hence, engineering gives meaning to life - if it cannot be said
that engineering is life itself.
There are well over 30 engineering disciplines! These include:
 ..
 ..
 ..
.
.
 .
 .
 ..
 ..
 ..
 ..
 ..

It can be seen that the list is nearly endless!

2.
2.1 THE PYRAMIDAL STRUCTURE OF THE CADRES IN THE
ENGINEERING PROFESSION
Of course, we all know the shape of the pyramid which, in its basic form, can be
regarded as a triangle

The structure of the cadres in the engineering profession can be fitted into a
pyramid as shown below:

1

4

Q2.1: Which cadres of the engineering profession are labelled 1, 2, 3 & 4 in

the diagram above? Support your response with reasonable arguments!

Having answered the above correctly, we then need to discuss more in depth,
the functions, features and characteristics, qualifications, etc. of each of the
cadres
2.2 VARIOUS TRAINING INSTITUTIONS FOR ENGINEERING PERSONNEL IN
NIGERIA

 Federal Universities
 State Universities
 Private Universities
 Specialised Institutions
 Federal Polytechnics
 State Polytechnics
 Private Polytechnics
 Federal Monotechnics
 State Monotechnics
 Private Monotechnics
 Federal Technical Colleges
 State Technical Colleges
 Private Technical Colleges

Note: The issue of accreditation (which will be discussed in details in subsequent

lectures) is very important!

Institutions that run unaccredited programmes or run their programmes with

failed or expired accreditation status do so illegally. They, therefore, put their
institutions and their students in jeopardy. Graduates of any unaccredited
engineering programmes in the country are not registrable with engineering
bodies like COREN, NSE etc. The negative implications of such are massive!

Q2.2: Can you name any institution that you know (or, maybe, think) is
unaccredited and presently running an engineering program? Have you or do
you know anyone that has attended such institutions?
