LEARNING COMPETENCIES
 Demonstrate understanding of the order of operations to solve 3 or 4 step
problem applying principle of GEMDAS
 Solve problems involving multiple steps using four fundamental operations.

Remember This!
Remember This!
GEMDAS is a mathematical acronym to help you understand how calculations work.
The acronym refers to the order in which any calculation should be done.
Remember This!
The acronym stands for the following:
 G = Grouping Symbol

 E = Exponent

 M = Multiplication

 D = Division

 A = Addition

 S = Subtraction

In some mathematical expressions, grouping symbols such as: { } braces, [ ]

brackets, and ( ) parentheses are used. To evaluate expressions with several
grouping symbols, work first with the parentheses, then the brackets, and finally the
braces.
ORDER OF OPERATIONS
1. Compute inside the grouping symbol first.
2. Evaluate all exponents.
3. Multiply and divide left to right.
4. Add and subtract left to right.
These rules apply to all real numbers.
Examples:
I. Evaluate the following:
1. 12 + 27÷ 3 – 5 x (10 – 8) Compute inside the parentheses.

= 12 + 27 ÷ 3 – 5 x 2 Divide 27 by 3.
= 12 + 9 – 5 x 2 Multiply 5 and 2.
= 12 + 9 – 10 Add 12 and 9
= 21 – 10 Subtract 10 from 21
= 11

PROBLEM SOLVING
Caiel has Php 2 000 to spend on these items.
Shoes : Php 545.80 Shirts: Php 198.95
Pants : Php 475.50 Socks: Php 55
He buys a pair of shoes, a pair of pants, 3 shirts, and 5 pairs of socks. How much
money was left?
Solutions:
Let N = be the amount of money left
2000 – [545.80 + 475.50 + (3 x 198.95) + (5 x 55)] = N
2000 – [ 545.80 + 475.50 + 596.85 + 275] = N
2000 – 1 893.15 = N
Php 106.85 = N
Php 106.85 was the amount of money left.

Translating and Evaluating Algebraic Expressions

In mathematics, we use symbols like + - x ÷ .

In translating verbal phrases into algebraic expressions, it is important to know the

words that are used to indicate mathematical operations. Some of these words are
shown in the chart that follows.

Addition ( + ) Subtraction ( - ) Multiplication (x) Division (÷ )

 plus  minus  times  divided by
 more than  less than  multiplied by  the ratio of
 increased by  decreased by  the product of  the quotient of
 the sum of  the difference of
 the total of  subtracted from
 added to

Example 3 Translate the verbal phrases into algebraic expressions.

a. The sum of a and b
b. 8 more than m
c. Twice z
d. The difference of c and 5
e. 3 less than a

Solutions:
a. a + b
b. m + 8
c. 2z
d. c – 5
e. a – 3

Example 4 Translate these phrases into their algebraic equivalents.

a. The difference of thrice a number and 6
b. The sum of three consecutive even integers
c. 10 less than 5 times a number

9|Page
Solutions:
a. If x represents a number, then
“ thrice a number “ = 3x
“the difference of thrice a number and 6” = 3x – 6
b. If x represents the first even integer, then
x+2 = the second even integer
x + 4 = the third even integer
x + (x+2)+(x+4) = the sum of three consecutive even integers
c. If y represents a number, then
“ 5 times a number” = 5y
“10 less than 5 times a number” = 5y – 10

Example 5 Write an expression that gives the value of each quantity.

a. the number of keys on x pianos if each piano has 55 keys
b. the distance left to run after doing z meters from the starting line of a 50-
meter sprint
c. the time it takes to travel a distance of m kilometers at the rate of n
kilometers per hour

Solutions:
a. 55x
b. 50-z
50 m
z 50-z
𝑚 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
c. , since time =
𝑛 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒

There are conventions to follow in writing algebraic expressions. The following are
the common errors. Try to avoid them.

Incorrect Correct
Expression
Mathematical Symbol Mathematical Symbol
x2 2x
(The variable is written (The variable is written
twice x
before the constant.) after the constant)
x>y y+x
(This is read correctly as (“more” here indicates
x more than y
“x is more than y”) addition)
3–z
(The expression refers to a
z<3
quantity that is z units smaller
(This is read correctly as
z less than 3 than 3. For example, 1 less
“z is less than 3”)
than 3 is 2, since 3-1 = 2)

8x – 5
8(x - 5)
8 times the difference (This is read correctly as
(8 is multiplied to the difference
of x and 5 “the difference of 8 times
of x and 5.)
a number and 5.”)

Evaluating Algebraic Expressions
To evaluate an algebraic expressions means to replace a variable by a particular
value and to simplify the expression.
Example 6 A Janitor is paid Php 350 each day for an 8-hr shift. Each extra hour is
paid Php 60.

To compute for the Janitor’s salary for the week, the manager uses the expression
350 x + 60 y
where x = the number of days worked in a week
y.= the number of extra hours.

Compute how much each of these janitors will receive for the week.
a. MELVIN : 4 days, 6 extra hours
b. WILLY : 5 days, 10 extra hours

Solutions: Use the expression 350x + 60y by substitution.

a. MELVIN: b. WILLY:
x = 4, y = 6 x = 5 , y = 10
350x + 60y = 350(4)+60(6) 350x +60y = 350(5) + 60(10)
= 1400 + 360 = 1750 + 600
= 1760 = 2350
Melvin’s salary for the week is Php 1 760. Willy’s salary for the week is Php 2 350.

TITLE Let’s PLACE IT!
LEARNING COMPETENCY
Solve Problems in daily life involving decimals that are money related

Remember This!

 The word "Decimal" really means "based on 10" (From Latin decima: a tenth
part).
 The place value system is also used in reading and in writing decimal
numbers.
 Decimal numbers maybe added or subtracted with or without regrouping.
 To multiply by a power of 10, move the decimal point to the right. The
number of zeros in the power of 10 tells how many places the decimal point is
to be moved to the right.
 In dividing decimal numbers, multiply both the divisor and dividend by the
same power of 10 that will make the divisor a whole number.
 A fraction may be written as a decimal number by dividing the numerator by
the denominator

Apply knowledge of addition and subtraction of integers to solve daily problems

Remember This!

 Integers are signed numbers

 The absolute value of number is the distance between that number and zero
on the number line. It is denoted by two bars (||).
 To add integers with the same sign, add their absolute values and use the
common sign in the answer.
Examples:
A diver dives a depth of 5 meters. After checking out the corals, he
dives to a point that is 8 meters lower. At what depth is he now?
Solutions:
a. Using number line:

b. -5 + -8 = The diver is 13 meters depth

 To add integers with different signs, get the difference between their absolute
values and use the sign of the integer with greater absolute value in the
answer.
Examples:
Audric saves Php15 from his day’s allowance. However, he has to
pay Php6 to the class treasurer. After paying the class treasurer, how
much is left of his savings for the day?
Solutions:
a. Using number line

b. 15 + (-6) = Php 9 was left in Audric’s savings

 To subtract integers/signed numbers, add its additive inverse.

For any real numbers x and y. x – (-y) = x + (+y)
x – (+y) = x + (-y)

Examples: Subtract. Show the process on a number line.

a. -8 – (-3) = -8 + (3)

Solve problems using Pythagorean Theorem

Remember This!

Pythagorean Theorem is named after Pythagoras, a Greek Mathematician of the

sixth century BC. This theorem can be used to find a missing side length in a right
triangle.

In a right triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of
the squares of the lengths of the legs. In the figure:
ΔABC is a right triangle with leg lengths, 𝑎 and 𝑏 and hypotenuse length, c.

The Pythagorean Theorem in symbol:

𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2

Examples:
1. In the figure 𝑎 = 3, 𝑏 = 4. Find 𝑐:
Solution:
𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2
𝑐 2 = 32 + 42
𝑐 2 = 9 + 16
𝑐 2 = 25
𝑐 = √25
𝒄=𝟓

2. Find 𝑎, if 𝑏 = 12 and 𝑐 = 20?

Solution:
𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2
202 = 𝑎2 + 122
400 = 𝑎2 + 144
𝑎2 = 400 − 144
𝑎2 = 256
𝑎 = √256
𝒂 = 𝟏𝟔
3. Find 𝑏, if 𝑐 = 11 and 𝑎 = 7 Solution:

𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2
112 = 72 + 𝑏 2
121 = 49 + 𝑏 2
𝑏 2 = 121 − 49
𝑏 2 = 72
𝑏 = √72
𝑏 = √36 ∙ 2

LEARNING COMPETENCY
Compute diameter, radius, and circumference of a circle using value of pi.

Remember This!

Radius is the distance from the center outwards.

Radius = Diameter ÷ 2 𝐷
𝑟=
2
or

𝐶
Radius = Circumference ÷ (𝜋 × 2) 𝑟=
2𝜋

Diameter goes straight across the circle, through the center.

Diameter = 2 × Radius 𝐷 = 2𝑟

or

𝐶
Diameter = Circumference ÷ 𝜋 𝐷=
𝜋

Circumference is the distance once around the circle.

Circumference = 𝜋 × diameter 𝐶 = 𝜋𝐷

or

Circumference = 𝜋 × 2 × radius 𝐶 = 2𝜋𝑟

𝜋, or “pi”, is a Greek symbol used to represent a special number. It is the ratio of the
circumference of a circle to the diameter.

𝝅 = Circumference ÷ Diameter 𝐶
𝜋=

Title Buy Me Up, When Your feeling Down!
Learning Competency : Solve daily problems involving rate

Remember This!

Discount (D) in the formula S = R – D is the amount by which a retailer

reduced the regular price of a product for a promotional sale. It is usually
expressed as a percent of the regular price or original price. This percent is
called discount rate.

Example:

After a discount of 10% , the price of a shirt became P750.00 . Find the
regular price.

Solution:
Let x = the regular price of the shirt in pesos
0.10x = the discount in pesos
900.00 = the discounted price in pesos

Formula: Selling Price = Regular Price – Discount

900 = x – 0.10x
900 = 0.90x
1000 = x
Answer: The regular price of the shirt is P1,000

Interest is generally defined as the amount charged for money

borrowed from any association or a bank. Interest can also be considered as
the income derived from investments in some profit-yielding ventures. The
interest or investment period is usually taken to be one whole year.
The interest can be computed by using the formula

I = Prt
where I = simple interest
P = principal amount invested or borrowed
r = rate of interest
t = time in years

Example:

Juan dela Cruz invested P250,000 in a real state which yields 10% at
the end of a year. Find the interest for 3 years.

Solution:
I = Prt
I = 250,000 (0.10)(3)
I = 75,000

Answer: The interest on P250,000 at 10% for 3 years is P75,000.

TITLE Give Me Pie!

LEARNING COMPETENCIES
 Read and interpret data presented in a circle graph.
 Construct pie graph to organize, present and analyze data from everyday life
situations

Remember This!

A circle graph is used to visualize information and data. It is usually used to

easily show the results of an investigation in a proportional manner.

A circle graph shows data as parts of a whole. The circle represents the
whole, or total. The angles, or sections, represents the parts. Because it resembles a
pie cut into slices, a circle graph is sometimes called a pie graph or pie charts.

Tips in Constructing a Pie Graph

1. Organize your data into a table or list. For easier data graphing write the
result in percent.
2. Find the angle measure for each section.
3. Draw a circle using a compass.
4. Draw each angle measure for each section then label each section.
5. Write the title of your pie graph.

Example: The result of a survey conducted by an ALS teacher to his 80 learners

about their favorite subject of a photo they always post on Instagram is shown below.
Draw a pie graph to display the data. Draw a pie graph based on the data.
Food – 43, Selfie – 25, Pets – 8, Nature – 4, Vacation - 4

Solution:

1. Organize the data using a table. Write the result in percent.

𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑉𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑠
𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 = x 100
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑉𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑠

Favorite Subject of a Photo Posted on Instagram

Photo Subjects Votes Percent
Food 40 50%
Selfie 24 30%
Pets 8 10%
Nature 4 5%
Vacation 4 5%
TOTAL 80 100%

68 | P a g e
2. Find the angle measure for each section.
Food: 50% of 360º = 0.5 x 360º = 180º

Selfie: 30% of 360º = 0.3 x 360º = 108º

Pets: 10% of 360º = 0.1 x 360º = 36º

Nature: 5% of 360º = 0.05 x 360º = 18º

Pets: 5% of 360º = 0.05 x 360º = 18º

Favorite Subject of a Photo Posted on Instagram

Photo Subjects Votes Percent Angle Measure
Food 36 45% 162º
Selfie 24 30% 108º
Pets 12 15% 54º
Nature 4 5% 18º
Vacation 4 5% 18º
TOTAL 80 100% 360º

3. Use a compass to draw a circle.

4. Use a protractor to draw the angle measuring 162º. Label the section, “Food
45%”.

Food
30

5. Draw and label the remaining section then write a title for the pie graph.

TITLE From a Distance

LEARNING COMPETENCIES
Read and interpret the scale on the map.

Remember This!

A map cannot be of the equal measurement as the region it represents. It

uses a scale to show sizes and distances in a way that people can conveniently use
and easily understand. A scale drawing of a place has the same shape as the real
place but it just compares actual distance on the ground to distance on the map.

Ratio is the comparison of two quantities. The ratio of a to b can be

𝑎
expressed in any of the following ways: “a is to b”; a:b; or . A ratio is used in
𝑏
scale drawing of maps. That is:
𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑆𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑒 𝐷𝑟𝑎𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑔 = 𝐷𝑟𝑎𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ ∶ 𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ
or
𝑀𝑎𝑝 𝑆𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑒 = 𝑀𝑎𝑝 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 ∶ 𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒

A. Calculating the Actual Distance Using the Scale

To calculate the actual distance: If the scale is 1: 𝑁, then multiply the map
distance by N. That is: 𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 𝑀𝑎𝑝 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 × 𝑁

Example:
A certain map shows a scale of 1 𝑐𝑚 ∶ 500 𝑘𝑚. What is the actual distance if
the map distance is 6 cm?

Solution: 𝑆𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑒 = 1 𝑐𝑚 ∶ 500 𝑘𝑚

𝑁 = 500 𝑘𝑚 (𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑒 1 ∶ 𝑁 = 1 𝑐𝑚 ∶ 500 𝑘𝑚)
𝑀𝑎𝑝 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 6 𝑐𝑚

𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 𝑀𝑎𝑝 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 × 𝑁

𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 6 × 500
𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 3000 𝑘𝑚

B. Calculating the Scale Distance Using the Actual Distance

To calculate the map distance: If the scale is 1: 𝑁, divide the actual distance
by N. That is: 𝑀𝑎𝑝 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 ÷ 𝑁

Example:
A certain map shows a scale of 1 𝑐𝑚 ∶ 6 𝑘𝑚. What would the map distance
be (in cm) if the actual distance is 15 km?

Solution: 𝑆𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑒 = 1 𝑐𝑚 ∶ 6 𝑘𝑚
𝑁 = 6 𝑘𝑚 (𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑒 1 ∶ 𝑁 = 1 𝑐𝑚 ∶ 6 𝑘𝑚)
𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 15 𝑘𝑚

𝑀𝑎𝑝 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 ÷ 𝑁

𝑀𝑎𝑝 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 15 ÷ 6
𝑀𝑎𝑝 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 2.5 𝑐𝑚
