Protocol ICCP - Shaft Grounding-1

This document provides instructions for addressing an alarm related to shaft grounding on a vessel. It explains that an alarm code 7 indicates a reading over 50mV, showing improper shaft grounding. This can be due to a dirty shaft grounding, worn silver brushes, faulty wiring, or a worn slipring. The document provides steps to clean the shaft grounding, check and replace brushes, verify proper wiring, and replace a worn slipring as needed.

Shaft grounding protocol

If the power unit measures more than 50 mV over the shaft grounding an alarm code 7 will be shown.
A reading higher than 50 mV shows that the shaft is not grounded properly. This can be due to several
reasons, shown below.

‐ Dirty shaft grounding

o Because of the location of the shaft grounding it is common that the shaft grounding
gets dirty. Oil and grease can get between the slipring and the silver-brushes, creating
an isolation. Please clean the shaft grounding with water and rags. Do NOT use any
kind of electro cleaner.

‐ Worn out silver brushes

o The silver brushes make contact to the slipring. If those are worn out, the grounding is
lost. Please check the silver-brushes regularly and replace when necessary to ensure
a proper shaft grounding.

‐ Faulty wiring
o The plus should be connected to the isolated pin of the shaft grounding. The minus
has to be connected to the non-isolated pin. Please check the cables at the
connection inside the power unit and make sure they are connected in the right way. If
not sure, measure the resistance according to ground. The plus should show an
infinite resistance, while the minus should give a reading close to zero ohm.

‐ Worn out slipring

o The silver-brushes will create a track on the slipring. When the track on the slipring is
becoming copper-colored, the slipring is finished. Try to move the silver-brushes a couple
of centimeters until it will be on a new track. If this is not possible, the slipring needs to be
replaced.
