Ans: The picture-book giant was unhappy because he felt that he was leading a very
boring and quiet life.

b) What did the picture-book giant sometimes do when he was angry?
Ans: The picture-book giant sometimes used to scream with anger, and he wished to
jump out of the pages of the book.

c) How did the picture book giant carry out his plan?
Ans: The picture-book giant carried out his plan by hiding the picture book on a rainy
day and going out to enjoy his freedom.

d) What happened when the giant went out?


Ans: The giant, who was made of paper, got wet when he went out because it was
raining.

Chapter 2 – Kinds of Sentences

Definition – A group of words that makes complete sense is called a sentence.


Example: The lion is the king of the jungle.

Kinds of sentences
1. Declarative sentence
2. Interrogative sentence
3. Imperative sentence
4. Exclamatory sentence
5. Negative sentence

Declarative sentence – A sentence which states or declares something is called a


Declarative sentence.
** A declarative sentence ends with a full stop. [ . ]
Examples: a) Sam lives in Bangalore.
b) They love to paint pictures.

Interrogative sentence – A sentence that asks a question is called an Interrogative


sentence.
** An interrogative sentence ends with a question mark. [ ? ]
Examples: a) Who is your neighbour?
b) When is your birthday?

Imperative sentence – A sentence that gives a command or makes a request or gives an


advice is called an Imperative sentence.
** An imperative sentence ends with a full stop. [ . ]
Examples: a) Wear a helmet while driving a motorbike.
b) Please pass me the sugar.

Exclamatory sentence – A sentence that expresses strong feelings like delight, surprise,
pain etc. is called an Exclamatory sentence.
** An exclamatory sentence may begin with an interjection, but it ends with an
exclamation mark. [ ! ]
Examples: a) What a beautiful baby she is!
b) Oh! It is too hot today!

Negative sentence – A sentence that contains negative words such as cannot, doesn’t,
do not, weren’t etc. is called a Negative sentence.
** A negative sentence ends with a full stop. [ . ]
Examples: a) She does not live here.
b) They weren’t feeling well.

Exercises:

1. Read the following sentences and state its kind:-


a. Raman is a fruit seller.  Declarative sentence
b. Hurrah ! My team scored a goal.  Exclamatory sentence
c. She cannot jump across the stream.  Negative sentence
d. Where are you going?  Interrogative sentence
