MODULE ONE: INSTRUCTIONAL ONLINE

DESIGN
Welcome! This is the workshop focused on designing your course with solid Design
Principles.

INRODUCTION
An online course is only as good as its instructional design. You can say the same
thing about a face-to-face course, but online, the importance of instructional design
gets magnified because you have less flexibility to change assignments, due dates,
quizzes, etc., while you are actually teaching.
Therefore, it is imperative that you design your course with solid instructional
design strategies in mind in order to avoid student confusion, to keep your students
on task, and ultimately, to enhance learning.
In this workshop, you will learn basic online design principles, which will become the
foundation that you will build your course upon.
• A brief History and the research
• 21st Century Learner.
• Working with Documents. Examples of Poor/Good Design
• Lab-activity (Develop a Template from one document)
• ADA compliance will be addressed during instruction and lab

LESSON OBJECTIVES
• Identify the development of historical processes that led to Quality
Matters and its emphasis of Online Design.
• Identify the new cognitive abilities of the 21st Century Learner.
• Identify basic Principles of Design.
• Create a model document to establish as a template for all documents
in the D2L shell, or related LMS (Learning Management System).
• Produce linked YouTube videos, with added caption for ADA
compliance and place URL in weekly modules for the support of
content enhancement.

SUMMARY & SELF-PRACTICE

Summary
Appling in the Principles of Online design provides the student with comfortable
reading and Understanding of course content. Uniform documents that provide
consistency, alignment, balance, and the right contrast increase student retention.
Generally, all the principles of design apply to any piece you may create. How you
apply those principles determines how effective your design is in conveying the
desired message and how attractive it appears. There is seldom only one correct
way to apply each principle.

Self-Practice
Continue exploring the design possibilities in MS Word. Find a design that you like!
Save the design settings for future documents. As time permits, explore content
focused videos that can enhance the learning materials of your course.
