General Safet Precaut ons - Work ng w th Batter es
Improper use of the products described in this manual may lead to personal injury and/or
property damage. GENEREX is not liable for injuries or damages that result from improper
handling these products.
Risks associated with improper use include: explosion, fire, and short circuits. Attent on
Battery terminals are always live, so never place metal objects or tools on top of the batter-
ies. Battery electrolyte solutions are highly corrosive. Should you observe leaks of electro-
lyte from a battery, be aware that these fluids are harmful to both eyes and skin.
Installation, maintenance, and repair of batteries and battery equipment should be per-
formed only by trained specialists (or personnel authori ed by battery manufacturers to
perform such services). Persons who have not been trained in battery safety or the proper
handling of batteries (or who have not been authori ed to work on them) must not handle
batteries.
Observe the follow ng regulat ons (IEEE standards USA onl

Observe also the following safety rules:
1. Ensure that all electr cal loads and power suppl es/charg ng dev ces
( nclud ng separators, fuses, and sw tches are sw tched off. Th s must be car-
r ed out b qual f ed personnel.
2. Remove all wrist watches, rings, chains, jewelry and other metal objects before
working with batteries.
3. Use insulated tools only.
4. Wear insulating rubber gloves and rubber shoes.
5. Never place tools or metal components on top of the batteries.
6. Make sure that the battery or batteries are not mistakenly grounded. (The conse-
quences of an accidental or incorrect connec-tion can be mitigated reduced by ter-
minating the ground connection.) If the system is grounded, terminate the connec-
tion. Touch ng a grounded batter b m stake can result n severe electr c
shock.
7. Before establishing connections, make sure to verify polarity. (Better one too many
times than one too few.)
8. Filled lead-acid batteries contain highly explosive gas (hydrogen/air mixture). Never
smoke, handle open flames or create sparks near the batter es. Always avoid
electrostatic discharge; wear cotton clothing and ground yourself if necessary.
9. Wear the appropriate safety clothing and equipment.
For further information refer to the battery makers instructions for installation, maintenance, and operation of their
battery products.

WARNING! BACS modules must NOT be mounted on a damaged battery! If
a battery is damaged and its internal resistance is high, charging
current (or current being discharged) may follow the path of least
resistance and flow through the BACS module, not the battery.
Overheating and destruction of the BACS module can result
from this. For this reason, never use batteries that are damaged
or show high internal resistances

AVOID INSTALLATIONS IN CERTAIN AREAS
Do not nstall BACS n the follow ng areas
Wet or dusty places, or rooms that are not protected from water or high humidity
Areas with a constantly high concentration of salted or oxidi ing gases
Areas close to sources of extreme heat, open flames, or sparks, or having high variations in
temperature
Areas prone to physical vibrations
Areas with high gas concentration or flammable materials
MONITORING S STEM - MONITORING AND ALARMS
BACS s a mon tor ng s stem and should be used accord ngl . Ensure proper sett ng of
the alarm threshold and proper t me frame for react on to alarms
BACS is a tool designed to increase the durability of accumulators, but its most important
function is to monitor the battery in order to avoid breakdowns. For this reason, it is recom-
mended that situations that trigger alarms be attended to within two hours of alarm notifica-
tion. BACS may not be able to eliminate altogether the risk of battery or charger failures,
but through its advance warning system and patented Equali ation process, it gives the user
the ability to prevent the issues that can result from such failures
Never m x and match d fferent BACS C Module vers ons or BACS Measur ng cable
t pes! (For example: using BACS C Modules with REV 2 and 3 on the same battery sys-
tem, using BACS BC2 and BC5 cables in the same battery system.) This practice can
damage modules and lead to inaccurate measurements.
The installation of BACS consists of four parts.
The Quickstart manual describes part one to three.
For further information please refer to the BACS user manual
and the BACS VIEWER documentation.
In order to ensure opt mum support of the BACS
Velcro straps, the surface of the accumulators
should be dr and free of mpur t es and grease
res dues.
Please note that you only use cleaning products
recommended by your battery manufacturer.
If you are unsure, only use soapy water for cleaning.
After cleaning carefully dry the surface of the accu-
mulator with an antistatic fabric.
The cables should be placed as close as possible to
the battery poles, but above the battery connectors.
The measuring cables are color coded:
black: Negative polarity (-) of the battery Order No.: BC5xx
red: Positive polarity (+) of the battery
Please refer the operating instructions of your batte-
ries. Use manufacturer's torque values for tightening
pole bolts.
Please note that a polarity reversal of the measuring
cables can damage the integrated fuse of the cable.

L ne Check
Use the line check for quick analysis to find contact
problems.
Use the line check for quick analysis to find contact
problems. This test method allows you to locate
missing or incorrectly connected bus cables, faulty
bus connections of BACS modules, or faulty or inter-
rupted bus cables. These errors can be fixed imme-
diately while running an active test.
Attent on
The line check can only be carried out while
modules are in delivery state (default address
0).
During the Line Check analysis procedure the bus
cabling must be star-shaped. If several bus strings
are present, each bus string must be tested separa-
tely.
If you run the bus cabling as a ring, the ring must be
interrupted during the line check
The Line Check provides two modes:
Send L ne“ and
Rece ve L ne“.
Runn ng a Send L ne test procedure
Send Line will test used transmission lines TX (PIN
1 + 2). To start a line check, proceed as follows:
1. Start the current BACS Programmer.
2. Select the button „Line Check“ .
3. Select the mode Send Line“.
4. Press the button Start“.
5. Die If all status indicators of the module LEDs
connected to the bus line flash red / green, there
is no line fault
6. If any other LED status is shown, check cabling
and connections of the indicated modules and
repeat.
Rece ve L ne Test

To start a Rece ve L ne test
1. Start the current BACS Programmer“ .
2. Select the button.„Line Check“.
3. Click the mode Receive Line“.
4. Disconnect the last BACS module connected in
the bus line from the BC0X-XXXX meas urement
cable. Not to confuse it with the Bus cable!
5. Press the Start“ button.
6. Now, while the addressing switch on the BACS
module is permanently actuated, connect the
module to the measuring cable again and then
release the button.
If the programmer receives the signal sended by the
module, the programmer begins to count backward.
The connections are fine if the counter counts down
from 300 onwards.
A counter counting up to 0 is not required. It is suffi-
cient if 10-15 x has been successfully counted back.
D agnost cs If the programmer do-
es not count backwards
If the counter does not count backwards successful-
ly, the error location between the last module and
the WEBMANAGER is located If it happens, repeat
the test with the module located in the center of the
bus line. If the programmer is now successfully
counting down, the error location is between the
middle and the last module - you need to test this
area again. If the counter does not count down suc-
cessfully, the error location is between the middle
and the first module.
Please note that there may also be several defects.
There are two options to address BACS modules:
a Automat c Mode - addresses will be set automatically
b Manual Mode - addresses will be set manual
2.3.1. Sett ng up Addresses

3. Press the “Start“ button.
4. By pressing the module buttons, you will assign
addresses to the modules. The ascending order
starts at Start Ad dress and moves on until it
reaches End Address . Usually the address 1 is
assigned to the module of battery No. 1, in the
battery string 1. If you address a second string,
select the last ending address and add 1 to defi-
ne the next starting address.
Example
string 1 = 1-32, string 2 = 33-64, etc.
Please ensure, that no address will use multiple,
neither in multi-string systems.

that the corresponding COM port is closed.
Scan Mode
The scan mode collects basic data about all
connected BACS modules.
Automatic queries can be made from the total or
partial address range of the connected BACS mo-
dules.
Start / End Address
Specify the modules to be queried.
You can specify queries within a range between 1
and 600 addresses.
Pollrate
In larger systems with many modules, a very high
interrogation speed can lead to interrogation errors. If
there are above-average number of query errors, we
recommend lowering scan speed and repeat the
query.
Clear old values at start
This function deletes the old values for each new
scan. If this function is not selected, values are only
overwritten.
Values that have not been measured during the
next run remain unchanged.
Next mpedance measurement
n xx m nutes
Next impedance measurement in xx minutes allows
you to define the query cycle in minutes. The internal
resistance of the connected battery can be mea-
sured in intervals of at least 15 minutes. Within this
time, the current value is collected from the memory
of the BACS module and displayed.
Start“ / Stop“
Started or finished the scan process.
Commun cat on
During scanning, you can observe the behavior of
the modules when they are queried.
Valid / Missing answer“ shows you whether the
modules have responded correctly, and CRC-Error“
indicates the number of corrupted data packets.
Reset sets the counter to 0“.

These data are useful for configuring events within
the BACS system. You can display the collected
data directly via the Module_SubScreen“ menu.
Logging Options “ gives you options to save with
measuring protocols and log files as a standardi ed
*.csv format.
Manual Mode
The manual mode allows individual requests to the
connected BACS modules.
Once activated, a new window will open automati-
cally, that exclusively displays the data of the con-
trolled module.
How to get data from the module
Enter the Address“ of the module you wish to
query. There are several buttons near the address
button to measure the modules. The measurement
results are displayed in Module Values“.

control the circuits of the batteries.
If the battery system of your UPS uses a center tap
using a configuration like that, you need to setup
your BACS system according to it.
To handle different power circuits your BACS confi-
guration needs for each power circuit an indepen-
dent string.
