CPM Analysis (Critical Path Method) PDF

The critical path for the project is A-B-C-D-E-F with a total float of 0 days and a project duration of 58 days. If activity X with a duration of 8 days is added as a predecessor of activity F, the critical path would become A-B-C-D-E-X-F with a total project duration of 60 days. Shortening the project duration to 50 days is not possible as there is no float or room in the schedule. A 3-day delay to activity C would not impact the critical path or project completion date. Having one resource, Ahmed, work on both activities C and D concurrently would not change the critical path or project duration.

Exercise (1)

Critical Path Method (CPM) Exercise

Activity Predecessors Duration

A NIL 6
B NIL 10
C A 8
D B 12
E C,D 8
F A 50
G E 4
H C 2
I H 2
J E 10
K I 6
L I,J 2
M L 8
N F 2

First. Get Critical Path (CP).

Second. If activity (X) 8-day activity added as a predecessor of activity F, does it change the CP?

All the following supposes X is not added yet

Third. Top management asked you to shorten the project time to be 50 days, what does it
mean for your project?

Fourth. Activity C delayed 3 days, how it will affect project schedule?

Fifth. If your resource Ahmed is the sole resource to execute C & D, how does it change
project schedule, if you know that all these tasks (C & D) need a full-day effort from Ahmed?

Answers (1)

First. CP equals 58 day, AFN

Second. Yeah, it makes CP equals 60

Third. TF = -8 , no room

Fourth. No changes at CP

Fifth. CP ,still, equals 58 (dependency based on common resources Ahmed, resource- leveling)
Exercise (2)
Find the critical path of the following project:
ID Activity Duration Predecessors
2 A 2 days
3 B 3 days A
4 C 4 days A
5 D 5 days A
6 E 6 days B FS+4 days, C,D
7 F 6 days B,C,D FS+3 days

Solution (2)
By Tables:
ID Activity D(Days) Predecessors ES EF LS LF TF
2 A 2 12/1/2009 12/2/2009 12/1/2009 12/2/2009 0 days
3 B 3 A 12/3/2009 12/5/2009 12/4/2009 12/6/2009 1 day
