Food shopping - Typical situation
VOCABULARY
Barcode The black and white lines and numbers put on products to give
stores information about the price, stock levels, etc. of the
product. It can be scanned electronically and a computer will
give you the information.
Biggest The superlative of "big".
E.g.: Russia is the biggest country in the world.
Bike A mode of transport that has 2 wheels, no engine and completely
manual. You sit on it and push the pedals with your feet.
Abbreviation for "bicycle".
Cashier The person you give the money to in a shop when you buy
something.
Chip A small piece of something bigger that has been broken off.
Crackers A salty biscuit often eaten with cheese.
Daddy The familiar name used by young children to call their father. As
they get older this gets shortened to dad.
Different The opposite of same. (Adjective) Used to decribe two or more
things that are not the same.
Employee A person who works in a company that has a contract and is
paid by that company.
Frozen Something that is very cold, for example water at below zero is
frozen. You can buy food that is frozen and it will last a long time
(if you keep it in your freezer).
Grams Unit of measurement. There are 1,000 grams in a kilogram.
Helpful (Adjective) This describes someone or something that helps you
to do something.
Household This refers to the people living together in the same house.
E.g.: There are 5 people in our household.
Ice Frozen water, what water changes into at below zero
temperatures.
Kilogram A measurement of weight; there are 1,000 grams in a kilogram.
(Abbreviation: Kg.)
Leaf The thin, green roundish parts of a tree.
Machine Something that performs tasks automatically and not manually,
e.g., a washing machine, a photocopier or a printer.
Mint 1. A type of candy.
2. A common flavor of chewing gum and toothpaste.
3. A type of plant.
Pin A small, thin, long metal instrument used to keep things like
material in place.
Popcorn This is typically eaten at the cinema. It can be either salted or
sweet and it's made from corn.

Product A generic term for tangible things that businesses make and sell.
Same Opposite of different. To be identical.
Scale A device used to measure the weight of things.
Section A part, piece or area of something.
E.g.: You are not allowed into this section of the building.
Shopping cart Small vehicle with wheels that can be pushed around the
supermarket to carry things.
Sweet 1. (Adjective) The opposite of savory. Sugar is very sweet.
To ask To inquire, to question somebody.
To enter To go in. The opposite of to exit.
To realize To comprehend something suddenly. E.g.: When I saw the blood
on his hand, I realized he had done it.
To return To go back to where you came from. Also to give something back.
E.g.: I returned your jacket to you last week.
To scan 1. To use an electrical device to copy an image and put that
image on a computer.
2. To look quickly for something. E.g.: I scanned the page for
errors.
To weigh To measure something or someone using a scale. When you
weigh something it tells you how many kilos, grams, pounds, etc.

Unopened Sealed. The opposite of opened.
Who Used especially in questions to ask which person or people, or
their name.
Yourself If you do an action that reflects on you, you affect yourself.
E.g.: If you cut your finger, you hurt yourself.
TYPICAL SITUATION - GROCERY SHOPPING. LISTEN AND
REPEAT
A: Mikey, do you want to go to the grocery store with me?
B: Sure, daddy; but can I ride my bike? Please...
A: Sorry, kiddo, you can't. It was raining outside a while ago and everything is wet. We
should go in the car.
B: OK, daddy. I can ride my bike later. Let's go!
A: OK, Mikey. First we need a shopping cart. There they are. Alright, let's look at the
list and see what we need...milk, carrots, bread, kleenex, ground beef, oranges,
cauliflower, ice cream and popcorn.
B: Dad, I'll get the kleenex. I know where they are!
A: OK Mikey. You get the kleenex and I'm going to ask where the popcorn is...
A: Excuse me, in which aisle is the popcorn?

C: The popcorn is with the potato chips and crackers in aisle 6.
A: OK, thank you. And one more thing; where do I find plastic sandwich bags?
C: Those are on the other side of the store, in the household goods section. I believe it's
aisle 17.
A: Right. Thanks.
B: Here are the kleenex, Dad!
A: Thanks, Mikey. OK, what were we going to look for next? Let's see... let's go to the
produce section and get the oranges, carrots and cauliflower...
A: OK, Mikey, we need to weigh 5 pounds of oranges. You can help by putting the
oranges onto the scale... Good. There's 2 pounds... 3.5 pounds... and one more
orange... 5 pounds! Good.
B: I like going to the store with you, dad! Let's go get the bread now.
A: Alright, I think that's everything on the list... oh, we almost forgot the ice cream!
B: The ice cream is in the frozen foods section. Let's get mint chocolate chip.
A: OK, now we have everything. Are you ready to go get in the checkout line?
B: Sure dad, but can I get a piece of candy... please?
A: Sure. I guess you deserve it. You've been pretty helpful today. Go pick out one thing,
and then come back to the checkout.
D: Hello sir, how are you doing today?
A: Oh, I'm fine thanks. And yourself?
D: Well, I can't complain. Did you find everything you were looking for today?
A: Yes, we did, thanks! My son was very helpful, as usual.
A: Here's the candy I picked out, daddy.
A: Wow, of course you pick the biggest one! OK, well that's all for us today.
D: OK, great. Your total is $21.76. Were you planning on paying with cash or a credit
card?
A: A credit card, here it is.
D: OK, thank you....And just sign here please. You saved $2 today on items that were
on sale. Thank you and have a great afternoon!
A: Thanks, you too! Bye now.
A: Excuse me, my son and I were in here about an hour ago. We bought these two
cartons of milk but when we got home, we realized that one of them was open. Can
we return the open one and get a new one?
D: Yeah, that's no problem. Let me see the item please...OK, I'm just going to mark
down what item it is and you can go choose a new one. Pass through checkout once
again before you leave, please.
A: Thanks. I'm going to get it now... Here you go. The same product, just a new carton.
D: Fine. Let me just scan the barcode and you can be on your way.There you are. I'm
sorry about that. Have a good one!
A: No problem. Thanks very much.
