This document proposes using New Generation Learning Challenge (NGLC), specifically tambiolo (strips with printed fraction additions), to enhance Grade 4 pupils' skills in adding dissimilar fractions at Isidro Paredes Elementary School. A pre-test showed most pupils had low scores in this area. The action research will assess NGLC's effectiveness by comparing pupils' pre-test and post-test mean scores and analyzing the difference using statistical tools. The proposed intervention will develop tambiolo learning tools and use them in lectures from August 2-6, 2017. A post-test will then evaluate if pupils' scores improved with the help of NGLC. The total estimated cost is 30,500 PHP.

I. Context and Rationale
Based on the result of the Pre-Test conducted, it shows that majority of the Grade
Four pupils got low scores in PELC objective in Mathematics under addition of dissimilar
fraction. Considering that mathematics is one of the most challenging subjects for the Grade
Four learners of Isidro Paredes Elementary School.

Voogt et al (2013) finds ICT have a positive effect on teaching and learning. This was
the leading question of the International EDUsummIT in The Hague, the Netherlands. The
bases for the discussion were the scholarly findings of the International Handbook of
Information Technology in Primary and Secondary Education, a synthesis of research in the
field of information and communication technology (ICT) in education.
Dixon et.al. (2013) elaborates that students should be perform fraction computations
using visual models and when such problems are presented in context.
The researcher believes that technology has certainly changed the way we live. It
has impacted facets of life and redefined living. Undoubtedly, technology plays an important
role in every sphere of life. Several mundane tasks can be automated; also many complex
and critical processes can be carried out with ease and greater efficiency with the help of
modern technology.
With the application of New Generation Learning Challenge (NGLC) in the classroom
many problems were addressed and made possible solutions particularly in enhancing
pupils’ performance along addition of dissimilar fraction.

II. Action Research Question


This action research aimed to assess the effectiveness of New Generation Learning
Challenge (NGLC): A tool to improve skills in Addition of Dissimilar Fraction of Grade four
pupils of Isidro Paredes Elementary School for school year 2015-2016.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following question:


1. What is the mean score of grade four pupils on the pre-test before NGLC was
presented?
2. What is the mean score of grade four pupils on the post-test after NGLC was
introduced?
3. Is there a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores after
NGLC was introduced?
4. What is the effect size on the performance of Grade four pupils after NGLC was
introduced?
III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy
The New Generation Learning Challenge (NGLC) uses (tambiolo) as an
intervention and strategy provided to enhance skills in addition of dissimilar fraction. The
tambiolo serves as an item bank for the strips where addition of dissimilar fraction were
printed.

IV. Action Research Method


A. Participants and/or other Sources of Data and Information
This study will be conducted at Isidro Paredes Elementary school covering the Grade
Four class this School Year 2017-2018

B. Data Gathering Methods


The data to be used for statistical computation will be the performance of the pupils
in the pre-test and post-test covering “Addition of dissimilar fraction.” The study will use the
universal sampling which means that all pupils will be the as respondent.

C. Data Analysis
Gathered data will be interpreted using statistical tools specifically mean, standard
deviation, paired sample t-test and eta2.
