Writing is an ART

 Success in writing can be reflected through effectiveness.


 We have to sharpen our writing skills in order to get
placed in good jobs and after getting the job, also to
retain it.
 We can not sharpen the writing skills in one day or in
one week. It is an art which takes years to sharpen.
 “Reading maketh a full Man; Conference a ready
man; and writing an exact man”. (Francis Bacon)
The Present Scenario

• Writing is replaced by documents, images and


photographs taken or downloaded by using gadget.

• Increase in availability of other resources.

• Aversion towards writing habit.

• Willing to wound but afraid to strike.

• Effective writing develops one’s skills in planning, summarising, critical


thinking and creativity.

subject matter.

 What are you writing?

 Why are you writing?

 To whom are you writing?

 What should be your outcome?


Focus on the Readers

 Who are your readers?

 What relationship you have with the reader?

 What will be his/her reaction after reading?

 How far the reader is interested in the area?


The Readers :

 Not of the same type.

 Educational background may vary from person to person.

 They may criticize your writing.

 They may be from various culture.

 Their gender state may differ.


Qualities of Effective Writing
 Clarity : A writer must aim to express but not to impress. The purpose of
writing may unfruitful due to the lack of clarity about the aim.
 Brevity : Long sentences and paragraphs impede the writer’s intended
meaning. The element of the writing should be short and crisp.
 Unity : One tense, mood and voice should be used from the beginning to the
end.
 Coherence : Maintain proper coherence by ensuring one controlling idea both
in sentence and paragraph.
 Order : Select a proper order to ensure coherence.
 Language : Proper usage of language and tone should be followed.
 Correctness : Proper grammatical rules should be followed such as sentence
structure, capitalization, double negatives, subject-verb agreement etc.

Pre writing
 Identify the main idea and make sure the content relates o the topic.

 Identify the parts of writing and break them into small chunks.

 Complete the pre-writing by adding notes regarding research and facts.


Writing
 Use pre writing as a checklist and develop the ideas and content.

 Write using proper sentence and paragraph structures.

 Expand and explain the thoughts clearly and thoroughly.


Re-Writing
 Go through the content and analyze whether it has achieved the goal .

 Edit, delete and rewrite the content if necessary.

 Finally, proofread for punctuation, spelling, grammar and usage error.

• Journal papers : A specialized form of expository writing .
• Thesis : Similar to journal article, emphasize on arguments.
• Book Review : Overall evaluation of the content of a book.
• Paragraph/ Essay writing : A composition in the form of a prose on
a variety of topics.

 A list of both textual references and other works.

 Lists all the works including background reading.

 Entries are arranged in alphabetical order.

 It contains only the works you have cited in the text of your writing.

 All paragraphs must follow unity in context
 Every paragraph must have one particular subject or theme
 irrelevant paragraphs should be avoided

 Avoid negatives and too many abbreviations
 Diverge sentence length
