SINGING SIMPLIFIED

PRACTICING TIPS!

•Don’t skip any lessons. The course is laid out in a

specific order for many reasons. (Sure, feel free to
peek ahead to see what’s coming if you’re curious,
but make sure to practice the lessons in order.)

•Keep practice sessions to 20 – 30 minutes at a

time. If your throat and voice feel healthy, then you
can try 2, 20-minute sessions per day once in a
while. (You can do the breathing exercises as much
as you like though, because you’re not using your
vocal cords.)

•Download all of the mp3’s (Vocal Exercises) from

every lesson that includes them. We’ll be using a
few of them again for some lessons later in the
course. You’ll see the “Resources Available” prompt
in the upper left corner of your screen when watching
the lessons.
•The Vocal Exercises are made for men and
women of all vocal ranges. Therefore, don’t jump in
until you feel comfortable, and don’t sing any higher
than you are able to do so without straining. Chances
are very good that you won’t start right at the
beginning of each exercise. (Many singers won’t start
until 30, or even 90 seconds or more in.) And... there
is a 99.99% chance you won’t sing all the way to the
end of each exercise either. The scales are designed
so that the lowest of male singers and the highest of
female singers can use them for their practice.

•Every Vocal Exercise is offered in at least a few

different tempos or BPM’s (Beats Per Minute).
Always choose a tempo that you are comfortable
with to start, before you experiment with faster and
slower tempos. Faster and slower tempos each have
their own challenges.

•When doing your Vocal Exercises try to keep an

“exaggerated” face. When singing
the exercises keep your jaw nicely dropped, and hold
as much of a “smile” as possible. When you’re
singing your songs you won’t have to worry about it
quite as much because you’ll want to get a more
natural feel/vibe, but it’s important to practice that
way so your technique is solid, even when you’re
being a little “lazy” with it.
•Stand up whenever possible when singing for
now. Sitting down makes it more difficult to breathe
and sing.

•Always do a few warm-ups before you start

singing. Lips rolls, breathing exercises, etc...

•Take 1 vocal rest day each week. That’s why each

Section is made up of 6 Lectures. If you do them
daily, you’ll have one rest day every week.

•Consistency over everything. Don’t practice a lot

one day and then skip several days. It’s much better
to practice 20-30 min/day, 5-6 days per week.

•When practicing the Vocal Exercises, don’t worry

too much about making them sound “pretty.” It’s
more about doing them technically well at
first. Then you can put in more vibe, feel, and
attitude.
•Just listen to the mp3s (Vocal Exercises) before
you start singing along with them.
I demo them for you in the lessons too of course, but
the more you simply listen to them before you try
singing along, the easier they’ll be for you. This is no
different than having the melody of a song in your
head before you sing it.

•Once you get comfortable with a specific

concept from a lesson, feel free to mix and match
the Vocal Scales with different words and/or vowel
sounds you learned in other lessons throughout the
course. All of the Vocal Scales (mp3s) are simply
melodies, so you can sing any word or vowel sound
along with them.

•HAVE FUN!! Of course you can take your singing

very seriously, as I do, but you don’t have
to be serious all the time. Getting stressed out,
frustrated, and anxious only makes practicing more
difficult. Stay loose, stay positive, and enjoy the
process!
