Well, we’ve been distance learning for over a month now, and it is one of the

most challenging things to do effectively. Thankfully, with technology and from the
incredible support of the school and the community, we have been able to continually
communicate with our students and try to help them continue their learning at home.
There are obviously advantages and disadvantages to distance learning, but overall, I’m
incredibly thankful that we have this opportunity to connect with students.
Some things we’ve begun doing during this incredibly challenging time is hosting
Zoom meetings every Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays as an entire team. Monday
through Thursday we meet as individual classes. This has given us an opportunity to
meet with students and at least see their faces! This also gives us the opportunity to do
a check in with students to be sure they have what they need. During whole team calls,
students and teachers alike are asked questions about how they’re doing, what kinds of
things they’re keeping busy with outside of school, and what are some personal and
academic goals that we all have to keep us going at home. We then continue to talk
about these things in coming meetings. It helps students and teachers alike to stay
consistent to their goals and help them achieve their at home learning goals. During our
individual block classes, students are working on what my mentor has designed as
“Creative Digital Learning Opportunities”. These are a way to create art and tie ELA into
it. Students have the opportunity to share these during block meetings.
There are some significant disadvantages of distance learning, and I think the
biggest thing that I’ve noticed, is just how much I miss the physical space of school and
being able to see students’ faces every single day. I miss being able to teach in the
same room. It’s also been tough because attendance is harder through distance
learning. Students often have at home responsibilities and we have to respect that. It is
also harder to deliver new content to students when they are away from school. All in
all, this has forced us as educators to be more creative and adaptable using technology
with students. This has given us the opportunity to connect with students in a way that
we never have before. Just like we would be doing in school, many of these activities
are learner driven, and learner focused. We as teachers are focusing on how can
students use their technology to better themselves and their education. Because many
students are working independently, that has also been a contributing factor to how
student work is decided.
Today, and every day since we left school, I am itching to get back to school. I
continue to tell myself, what we tell our students, is that what we are doing is for the
best, and it is what will keep us all healthiest and safest.
