Assignment 2 PDF

The document provides instructions for a fluid mechanics assignment involving the analysis and design of a water pipeline system for a reconstructed shopping centre. Students are asked to: 1) Calculate the minimum pressure needed at the pipeline inlet to meet an exit pressure of 50 kPa. 2) Determine the minimum power of the new pump. 3) Draw and annotate an energy grade line (EGL) and hydraulic grade line (HGL) for the new pipeline. 4) Compare the costs of the pump and pipeline system before and after reconstruction. The document outlines assumptions to make and provides evaluation guidelines and requirements for presenting findings in a computer-generated report with references.

Assignment aims:

1. To relate and apply fluid mechanic study in real-life application.

2. To develop a knowledge of the fundamental principles of fluid flow.
3. To develop a skill to analyse fluid system.
Before the reconstruction of a shopping centre, water was delivered by a pump into a building
through a 10 cm diameter, 100 m long, horizontally oriented, plastic smooth-walled pipe. The only
type of losses was the friction loss due to the (wall) shear stress ( ⁄8), which was
approximately 12.5 N⁄m .

New design envisages the installation of a new pump for supplying water, at the same flow rate as
before the reconstruction, from an outside water pool to an overhead closed reservoir in the
shopping centre. A new pipeline is made of cast iron consisting two pipes of 100 m long each and
both pipes slope upward at 1.5° in the flow direction. The diameter of the first pipe is 60 mm and the
diameter of the second pipe is 120 mm. The inlet of the first pipe is connected to the pump, and the
outlet is connected to the inlet of the second pipe through a sudden expansion. The second pipe is
terminated with a well-rounded exit into the reservoir.

1. For the new system, find the minimum pressure needed (to be supplied by the pump) at the inlet
of the pipeline if the pressure at the pipeline exit is 50 kPa.
2. Determine the minimum power of the new pump, in order to meet the requirement stated above.
3. Draw the energy grade line (EGL) and hydraulic grade line (HGL) for the new pipeline and
indicate (on the diagram) the head loss values at the important locations, such as at the location
of the pump, the entrance and exit of the pipes, and etc.
4. Compare the cost of the ‘pump plus pipeline’ system before and after the reconstruction using
the following guidelines:
a. the pump costs approximately RM 200 per kilowatt delivered to the fluid,
b. one meter of a cast iron pipe costs RM 35 per inch, and
c. 6 meters of 4-inch-diameter plastic pipe costs RM 90.

Following are the assumptions you should apply:

i. water is delivered at 20°C,
ii. the loss at the entrance of the pipeline is negligibly small, and,
iii. both pumps are 85% efficient.

ATTENTION:

All your assumptions and information from external texts, books, handbooks and etc., should be
listed and commented in the report with relevant references.

Your report with all schematics and diagrams must be prepared by your own by using a computer.

For estimation of the friction coefficient for turbulent flow you can use whether the Moody chart or
any other relevant experimental correlation (clear explain and show in your report what and how
you use them). If you use the Moody chart, it is allowed the chart to be copied from texts.

For estimation of the friction coefficient for turbulent flow in a smooth-walled pipe you can use the
Blasius formula, = 0.316/Re1/4.

Take 1 inch = 2.5 cm for cost estimation.
