Performance 5 (P5) Exam Syllabus


Trombone / Bass Trombone / Euphonium

Daily practice on each section of this technical syllabus is required. Use strategies learned in brass
class, your instrument class, and in your lessons to focus on a beautiful sound, melodic phrasing,
great intonation, clear or smooth articulation, rhythmic intention, physical ease and flow.

I. Scales (25%)
• Pages 24 through 37 of Milt Stevens Scale and Arpeggio Routines (memory not required)
o Tempos and articulations as written on page 24
o Use alternate positions AS MARKED, with developed ease through daily attention
o Inverted repeats (in other words, play same pattern, but from low to high to low for example)
o Repeat attempts are not permitted

II. Technical Work (25%)


• Arban – Multiple Tonguing section. #14 with no accents. #15 add accents every minim
o Prepare as written and down perfect 4th
o Relaxed breathe after every written minim (stay in time)
o ♩= 160 - 180
• Arban – Characteristic Study section. Perform Characteristic Study #1
o Note dynamics, phrase and slur markings
o ♩= 64
• Marstellar – Basic Routines Part 3. Flexibility section. Nos. 1, 2, 15, 16
o ♩.= 80 – 92, mf dynamic
o For #1 & #2, lightly articulate each repeated note

II. Études – (25%)


All etudes must be chosen in consultation with your teacher.

Tenor and Bass Trombone /Euphonium


• Bordogni - Perform one vocalise between Nos. 19 – 23 from book ONE
o Musicality, including developed phrasing, appropriate and controlled vibrato, contrasts,
intonation, beauty.
o Tenors: As written. Transposed up a perfect 5th. Down a perfect 4th. Down an octave.
o Bass trombone: As written. Transposed down a 4th. Down an octave.

Tenor trombone / Euphonium


• Blazevich - Perform one Studies in Clefs, No. 76, 78, 91 or similar

Bass trombone
• Blazevich - Perform one etude from book 2 of 70 Studies for Tuba. No. 56, 63 or similar

IV. Marcello, Galliard or Telemann (25%)
• Prepare one of the following pieces, all movements, without accompaniment. Attention must be on
presenting a refined and deliberate musical performance: phrasing, contrasting articulations, flow,
vibrato etc. Examiners may request several movements.

o Galliard
§ Any ONE of the Six sonatas for bassoon

o Marcello
§ Any ONE of the Six sonatas for violoncello (op. 1)

o Telemann
§ Sonata for bassoon in f minor (TWV 41: f1)
§ Any ONE of the 12 Fantasies for Flute (TWV 40: 2-13)
