Difference Between CRT and LCD

The document compares CRT, LCD, and LED computer monitors. CRT monitors use a cathode ray tube to produce images while LCD uses liquid crystals and LED uses light emitting diodes. Some key differences are that CRT monitors are larger, heavier, and consume more power than LCD or LED monitors. LCD and LED monitors are thinner, lighter, and more energy efficient. LCD monitors are generally more affordable than LED monitors.

CRT vs LCD Difference
Summary: Difference Between CRT and LCD is that CRT is a desktop/pc
monitor that contains a cathode-ray tube. A cathode-ray tube (CRT) is a
large, sealed glass tube.

While A LCD is a desktop/pc monitor that uses a liquid crystal display to

produce images. These monitors produce sharp, flicker-free images.

The main component of CRT is the vacuum tube while in LCD is the main

component is liquid crystal.

CRT(Cathode Ray Tubes)
 It is an evacuated glass
 An electron gun at the rear of the tube produce a beam of electrons
which is directed towards the screen of the tube by a high voltage
typically 15000 to 20000 volts
 Inner side screen is coated with phosphor substance which gives
light when it is stroked by
 Control grid controls the velocity of electrons before they hit the
 The control grid voltage determines how many electrons are actually
in the electron beam. The negative the control voltage is the fewer
the electrons that pass through the
 Thus control grid controls the Intensity of the spot where the beam
strikes the
 The focusing system concentrates the electron beam so it converges
to a small point when hits the phosphor coating.
 Deflection system directs beam which decides the point where the
beam strikes the
 Deflection system of the CRT consists of two pairs of parallel plates
which are vertical and horizontal deflection
 The voltage applied to vertical and horizontal deflection plates is
control vertical and horizontal deflection respectively.

There are two techniques used for producing images on the CRT screen:

1. Vector scan/Random scan

2. Raster scan display

Technology is evolving at an exponential pace while the outstanding gadgets
of the past are becoming obsolete and the new technology is rapidly
replacing the old one. The trend of change for computer users is more than
the people belongs to any other field of life. The computer monitors have a
special role in the use of the computer as the user gets every output on it. In
order to give a better experience to the user, advanced technologies are
being introduced and the new monitors are light in weight, better resolution,
vivid colors and harmless to the eyes. If you’re thinking to buy a new
monitor, then you must know thedifference between LCD, LED, and CRT
monitors.

Cathode Ray Tube Monitors

Cathode Ray Tube monitors  (CRT Monitors) are the conventional
computers, large in size and have wide viewing angles. The working process
of CRT is very simple in which the Cathode Ray Tube moves an electron gun
to and fro across the screen. The beam collides on the phosphor dots
present on the screen and emits light. The beam actives the pixels and
makes an image on the screen.
Benefits Of CRT Over LCD And LED
The display quality of LED is age and temperature dependent while CRT has
no such kind of issue. Moreover, LED is expensive and inaccessible to
everyone. Similarly, LCD monitor doesn’t support black and white feature
and also has less response time. On the contrary, CRT gives true black color
and has a high response time. CRT monitors are cheap and accessible to
everyone.

Liquid Crystal Diode Monitors

An LCD monitor is the advanced form of CRT monitors. A Cold  cathode
ray, the fluorescent  panel are two major components of the LCD.  The cold
cathode ray technology is used in LCD which emits electrons and light up the
fluorescent coated monitor screen. The process is known as backlighting.
The second component is a  fluorescent  panel, which is made of liquid
crystal. Liquid Crystal determines is current sensitive and determines the
number of electrons to pass through the screen to make the shape and
image of an object.
Benefits Of LCD Over CRT And LED Monitors
Unlike CRT monitors, LCD monitors are slim, occupy less space and consume
less energy. The large screen area makes it perfect for playing games,
watching movies while the size of the CRT monitor is always less  than the
specified size on the paper as its frame  around the glass screen covers more
than one-inch space. The flat Screen screen displays the perfect image while
its harmless for the eyes as it emits very small part of the radiation. The
feature of an auto button lets the user resize the screen size to make images
sharp and flexible. Moreover, it’s free from the burn-in issue which is a
major drawback of CRT and Plasma monitors. Unlike LED monitors, LCD
monitors are affordable and accessible for everyone.

Light Emitting Diode Monitors

Light Emitting Diode (LED) is an improved version of LCD monitor and
manufacturers have tried to eliminate the drawbacks of LCD monitors. The
both monitors are based on the same display technology and provide better
resolution. However, the difference comes on backlighting as LCD monitors
use Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light and LED monitors are based on light
emitting diode. The backlighting impacts badly on the image and decreases
its sharpness and brightness. WLED and RGB LED are the two types of LED
monitors, depending on the way LED placed in the panel.
Benefits Of LED Over CRT And LCD Monitors
LED monitors give a high-quality image with vibrant colors and viewing
comfort. LCD monitors are unable to display black and white image while
LED monitors are capable of producing true black hues. It consumes less
electrical energy than CRT and LCD monitors as a cold cathode fluorescent
lamp is embedded in the panel. The absence of mercury makes it eco-
friendly while zero percent flickering removes the chances of strain on the
eyes.

Conclusion
CRT, LCD, and LED have their own specifications, pros and cons. Before
buying the monitor, one should be particular about his or her requirements.
Notice your budget, space in the home and core features on which you can’t
compromise. No doubt, it will be a lucrative deal if one buys the monitor
after analyzing the above-mentioned features.
