TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION

1 Foreword
The „Inspection and Maintenance Procedure“ description is based on API-
recommended practice and Blohm + Voss experience of elevator links.

This recommended practice outlines a procedure for methods of inspection

and maintenance of elevator links to help prevent injury to personnel and
irreparable damage to equipment.

2 General

2.1 Techniques
Covered in this manual are methods to be employed for the inspection and
maintenance of the equipment covered on an item-by-item basis.

2.2 Deterioration of Equipment

Normal wear in course of use will eventually reduce the capability of the
elevator links. The existence or cracks, or the appearance of defects, can
indicate severe deterioration, even impending failure, and prompt attention is
required either to remove the elevator link from service immediately, or to
undertake appropriate repair as required.

2.3 Extreme Low Temperature

Ratings have been established at room temperature. The effect of low
temperature on steel must be recognized although no changes in design
safety factors have been provided. When operating at low temperatures,
caution must be exercised to take into account the lower impact capabilities
of many steels which are typically employed. The risk of failure may be
reduced by a critical load inspection.

2.4 Records
Inspection procedure are listed in this recommended practice and
generalized sketches of the elevator links showing points to be inspected are
to be provided. Written records should be maintained which accurately record
the inspection and maintenance history of each elevator link. Records should
include the date, personnel involved, and results of each inspection or
maintenance procedure performed.

3 Inspection

3.1 Frequency of Inspection

3.1.1 Routine Daily Field Inspection

Field inspection of the elevator links in an operating condition should be
made by the crew or the supervisor on a regular daily basis.

3.1.2 Quarterly Periodic Field Inspection

A thorough on-the-job shutdown inspection should be made on a periodic
basis, typically at 3 months intervals, or as special circumstances may
require.

3.1.3 Critical Load Inspection

Critical loads may be experienced, for example, severe loads, impact loads
such as jarring, pulling on stuck pipe, and/or operating at low temperatures. If
in the judgment of the supervisor a critical load has occurred, or may occur,
an on-the-job shutdown inspection equivalent to the quarterly periodic field
inspection should be carried out. If critical loads are anticipated, the
inspection should be conducted prior to and after the occurrence of such
loading. If critical loads are unexpectedly encountered, the inspection should
be conducted immediately after such an occurrence.

3.1.4 Dismantling Inspection

When need is shown in a field inspection, dismantling of the elevator link
from the rig should be made and an inspection in a suitably equipped facility
should be carried out.

3.2 Methods of Inspection

3.2.1 Routine Daily Field Inspection Procedure

Elevator links should be inspected on a regular daily basis for cracks,
elongation’s, and other signs of wear, corrosion, or overloading. If any
elevator link found to show cracks, excessive wear, etc., the elevator set
should be removed from service.

TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION

3.2.2 Quarterly Periodic Field Inspection

The periodic or critical load inspection in the field should be conducted by the
crew with the supervisor.

a) Cleaning
For the periodic or critical load inspection, all foreign matter should be
removed from surfaces to be inspected.

b) Dismantling
Dismantling of the elevator links from the rig is required if a detailed
inspection is necessary.

3.2.3 Dismantling Inspection

The elevator links should be dismantled from the rig and inspected in a
suitably equipped facility for excessive wear, cracks, flaws or deformation.
Corrections should be made in accordance with recommendations which can
be obtained from Blohm + Voss.

a) Cleaning
Before inspection, all foreign material such as dirt, paint, grease, oil,
scale, etc. should be removed from the areas to be inspected by a
suitable method.

b) Inspection Procedure
The inspection should be made by trained, competent personnel.

4 Maintenance and Repairs

4.1 Preventive Maintenance

A regular preventive maintenance program should be established for all
elevator links. Written maintenance procedure should be given to the crew or
maintenance personnel. Care should be taken that rating information and
warning labels are not missing, damaged or illegible.

4.2 Proper Repair

If repairs are not performed by Blohm + Voss, such repairs should be made
in accordance with methods or procedures approved by Blohm + Voss.

Minor cracks or defects, which may be removed without reducing safety or

operation of the elevator links, can be removed by grinding. Following the
repair, the part should again be inspected by an appropriate method to insure
that the defect has been completely removed.

Important: Never weld on Elevator Links!

4.3 Use of Worn Elevator Links

It is possible to approximately downrate elevator links due to wear. The
following figures indicate the rating on new links and the decrease in rating
by steps as the links are worn.

A periodic check should be made of worn diameters, particularly when weight

levels may be involved. If a question exists as to proper rating after use,
particularly if there is evidence of other damage, such as cracks, Blohm +
Voss should be contacted.

4.4 Beyond Repair

If the elevator link is defective beyond repair, it should be destroyed
immediately. Even if one elevator link of a set is beyond repair both
elevator inks have to be destroyed.

Table 3: Capacity of worn Elevator Link sets

Explanation how to use table 3:

Example: a 3.1/2”-500t elevator link with an actual dimension f of 5.7/8”(149,2 mm)

can be used with the full rated load 500 tons per set (as long as dimension f is bigger
than 5.5/8”).
If the dimension is equal or smaller than 5.5/8” the links have to be de-rated.
The load capacity of a set of links is based on the load capacity of the weakest eye.
