Why Impulse Test

The document discusses impulse testing of high voltage cables. Impulse testing subjects the cable insulation to high voltage transients to check if it can withstand lightning strikes and other power system disturbances. It outlines the equipment needed like impulse voltage generators, dividers, and oscilloscopes. Precautions must be taken when performing impulse tests to ensure safety. Standards like IS 7098 and IEC 60502 specify the test procedures and voltage impulse characteristics the cable must withstand without failure.

Why Impulse Test ?

During operation, all electrical equipment's are subjected to various types of transients. Their origin can
be external or internal to the power system. Due to higher rate of rise, insulation of the equipment is
subjected to high stresses. This can lead to partial or complete failure of the equipment.

Impulse Test is carried out to check insulating material used in high voltage electric cable may be
adjusted to sustain transient, resulting from nearby lightning strokes. The HV Cable should have
adequate insulation level to withstand the Transient.

Impurities in the insulation and protrusions in the interface between insulation and semi conductive
layers can be recognized fast and easily for they cause lower levels of the impulse strength. Particularly
so-called protrusions in the interface between insulation and semi conductive layers or inadequate
adhesion of the semi conductive layers to the insulation, both defects that can occur during the
production of the cable, are subjected to the test. During operation these impurities can cause increased
local electrical field strength in the insulation as well as water trees and electrical trees. Additionally
they speed up the aging process in the insulation of the cable and this can lead to early faults
respectively a shorter life time. These production related defects are not detectable by standard tests as
partial discharge measurement or voltage tests with power frequency.

To check the capability of the HV Cable against Transient, it is necessary to perform Lightning Impulse
Voltage withstand Test.

Types of Impulse: 1) Lightning Impulse 2) Switching Impulse

Impulse Voltage Generator:-

Basic Principle: Charging the capacitors in parallel & discharge in series.

The Impulse Voltage Can be generated by Charging and discharging of Capacitors through resisters, it
may be single stage or multistage. Impulse Voltage of High amplitude is done with multistage Impulse
Voltage generator.

Purpose of Impulse Test:-

 It is type test
 It is carried to check the surge withstand capability of HT Cable against over voltages generated
in the system, internal or externally.
 Power frequency test in not sufficient to check the surge withstand capability. Because the
stress distribution for PF voltage is different from Impulse Voltage.

Preparation of Cable sample:-

 For High voltage test & Impulse test sample have to be carefully prepared and terminated to
avoid excessive leakage or end flashover may occur during the test.
 The required cable length should be 10 Meters.
Equipment’s Req. for Impulse Test:-

 Lightning Impulse Voltage Generator.

 Capacitive Voltage Divider.
 Oscilloscope
 Transformer

Precautions during the Impulse Test:-

 Ensure Proper connection in the circuit properly before starting the test.
 Each equipment used must be properly earthed.
 Divider ratio must be selected properly in case of multi ratio voltage divider.
 Danger light and hooter must be on.
 Entry in the test room must be restricted.

Applicable Reference Standards:-

 IS 7098 (Part 2)-2011

 IS 7098 (Part 3) -1985
 IEC 60502 – 2014

Test Results:-

 Front Time : 1 µs to 5µs

 Tail Time: 40 µs to 60 µs
(Each core of the test sample shall withstand without failure 10 + and 10 – voltage impulses.)
