INTRODUCTION
To achieve academic success a student must attend school every day. Over the years the Head teachers,
Teachers even the officers at the Ministry of Education complain often about the large number of students
being late and absent from school on a daily basis.
Therefore the purpose of this project is to examine and gather information on the records of students’
attendance for four months at Mackenzie High School in order to investigate whether the regularity are as
high as detected and to suggest ways to resolve this issue.
TITLE
To assess the regularity and punctuality of students of Mackenzie High School.
METHODOLOGY
In order to collect data for this investigation, the researcher decided to seek permission through the class
teacher of 10 Business toinspect the students’ attendance register monthly for a period of one term (4
months), in order to extract data on regularity and punctuality for that specific term. The researcher also
recorded one month’s data on the actual time the students arrived late and distributed 30 printed
questionnaires the students to gather other information. This questionnaire was consisted of 12 questions.
The data collected will be analyzed using tables, graphs and mathematical techniques.

ANALYSIS OF DATA
The attendance records examined for the students in 10 Business for the past Christmas Term,it can be
clearly seen from the pictorial representation on Chart 1over half of the student are either late or absent
for the term. An average 59% of the students are either late or absent, 29% of the students arrives late to
school, 30% being absent. An alarming 57% of the students arrive late or were absent during the month
of October 2019 and almost half of the students being absent in the fourth month of the term amounting
to 47%.
Using the mathematical analysis as shown on Table 1, the researcher determined the estimated mean
number of minute a student was late. On average in the month of November the student arrived at school
26 minutes late.
The area where student resides summarized on Table 2 and histogram on chart 2 clearly shows that the
majority of students live further away from the schools’ premise. The area includes Wismar Hill, Wismar
Flat & Amelia’s Ward representing 86%, only 14% of the student lives around the school environs.
The responders indicated that lack of transportation as being as the leading cause of student tardiness.
The students not getting enough sleep attracted a sizable percentage, while lateness resulting from family
issues amounting to a minimum amount as shown on chart 3
The responders suggested that the government can put things in place to help with the student
punctuality. 57% and 43% of the students suggests the government should reduce transportation prices
and provide transportation respectively as shown on chart 4.
DISCUSSION OF FINDING
In her investigation the researcher found out that the majority of the students arrive late and are absent
from school. With the exception of December month where students actually abandon school (80% of the
students being late and absent) tardiness and absenteeism are at an average of 50%.
29% of the students arriving 26 minutes late on average every week miss out on an entire period of
teaching, which will certainly affect their performance.
Of the 30 questionnaire issued 26 of the responders live further away from the school environs which
could be a major factor contribution to their tardiness and being absent from school.
Since students have to travel long distances and transportation seems to be the major issue contributing to
their tardiness it is likely that they will continue to arrive late at school.
There was a marginal difference in the suggestion made by the responders when questioned on what the
Government can do to increase regularity in school. 57% suggests the Government reduce transportation
prices; this would be effective if the Government can reduce tax on fuel and vehicle supply. 43% of the
responders suggest that the Government should provide transportation for the students; this could be
achieved by the Government providing school buses free of cost to students.
CONCLUSION
After conducting this investigation, the researcher concludes that a large number of students are indeed
absent or arrive at school late on a weekly basis. The attendance rate at school is important because
students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently and on time. At
least 50% of the students in 10 Business miss the first subject on their time table which will certainly
affect their performance at school.
The area where the students live and not being able to access adequate transportation contributes
significantly to the students arriving late or being absent from school.
Finally, improvement in the student regularity and punctuality can be achieve if the Government put
measures in place to assist students with their transportation needs.
