1b - Computer System

This document provides an introduction to computer systems, including types of computer systems, concepts like memory and the CPU, hardware components like input/output devices, and classifications of computers based on function, size/speed, and brand. It defines a computer system as consisting of hardware, software, and a user. Key concepts explained include primary/secondary storage, analog vs. digital computers, supercomputers vs. mainframes vs. microcomputers, and system vs. application software. Diagrams illustrate the computer memory and block diagram of a computer.

Classification of Computer

1) On the basis of function or work

2) On the basis of Size and Speed

3) On the basis of brand

1) On the basis of function or work

1) Analog
(Works based on changing aspect of physical facts. Eg. speed, rotation, temperature, etc)

2) Digital
(Works based on digits 0 & 1 and their combination. Eg. addition, logical operation, etc)

3) Hybrid
(Works with both. Accepts analog signals, converts them to digital and processes. Eg. ???? )
2) On the basis of Size & Speed

1) Supercomputer
(Fastest. Used in research and numerical calculations, astronomy, nuclear plants, etc)

2) Mainframe Computer
(Fast, and big. Used for allowing thousands of users to use one mainframe computer. )

3) Mini Computer
(Smaller. Multi-user supporting up to a few hundred users at once.)

3) Micro Computer
(Smallest and general purpose computer. )
3) On the basis of brand

1) Apple
(Made by Apple. Uses mac OS.)

2) Branded
(Made by brands such as IBM, Dell, HP, etc. Uses Windows or Linux.)

3) IBM Compatible / Assembled

(Similar to branded, but has parts from many brands. Uses Windows or linux )

Computer Software

1) System Software
(OS, Driver, Utility, Translator)

2) Application Software
(Packaged, Tailored)
