ACTIVITY:
Proofread the following for sentence fragments. (Remember that fragments are pieces
of sentences punctuated as if they were complete sentences.)
Circle/Capitalize S if the group of words is a complete sentence, or circle/Capitalize F if
the group of words is a fragment.
Then, rewrite the fragments to make complete sentences.

1. Ms. Moody told her class to divide into small groups.


Answer: sentence

2. Coretta Scott King, the widow of Dr. Martin Luther King.


Answer: fragment

3. While Terry was on vacation, his car caused him a lot of trouble.

mark the word(s) that should NOT be capitalized.
Activity 3:
Proofread the following sentences for errors in capitalization. Using the
proofreading symbols for lowercase and capitalization, mark those word(s)
that should be capitalized and those that should NOT be capitalized.
Activity 4:
Carefully proofread the following sentences for errors in using the six
troublesome verbs (sit and set; rise and raise; lie and lay). Decide if the
italicized verb has been used correctly in the sentence. If it has not, use the
proofreading symbols to correct the verb.

Proofread the following sentences for errors in pronoun-antecedent
agreement. Use the proofreading symbols for omitting and inserting a word to
correct the sentences. Some sentences may not need any corrections.

Activity 6:
Proofread the following sentences for errors in the comparative forms of
adjectives and adverbs. Use the proofreading symbols to rewrite the adjective
or adverb, using the correct degree of comparison.
Activity 7:
Using the proofreading symbol for deleting, first delete the double negative.
Then rewrite each sentence correctly on the line provided.
