This is a summary of the 8 parts of speech*. You can find more detail if you click on
each part of speech.

dogs but I don't like cats.

Interjection short exclamation, oh!, ouch!, hi!, Ouch! That hurts! Hi! How
sometimes inserted well are you? Well, I don't

* Some grammar sources categorize English into 9 or 10 parts of speech. At


EnglishClub.com, we use the traditional categorization of 8 parts of speech. Examples
of other categorizations are:

 Verbs may be treated as two different parts of speech:


o Lexical Verbs (work, like, run)
o Auxiliary Verbs (be, have, must)
 Determiners may be treated as a separate part of speech, instead of being
categorized under Adjectives

 1. Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or ideas.

 5. Adverbs are words that describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
 6. Prepositions are words that describe the relationship between a noun
or pronoun and some other word or element in the rest of the sentence.
 7. Conjunctions are words that join two or more words, phrases, or
clauses.
 8. Interjections are words that show emotion.
