This thesis investigates computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling of turbulence in a compression ignition engine. The student, Dennie John, models fuel spray, combustion processes, and other phenomena using CFD under the supervision of Prof. G. Kalivarathan. The aim is to produce validated results that improve understanding of combustion and enable increasing fuel economy while decreasing emissions. Specifically, the thesis focuses on modelling mass concentration of fuel in the cylinder and combustion patterns, which influence turbulence. The modelling process involves turbulence modelling, multiphase flow modelling, combustion modelling, gathering modelling data, performing iterations, validating the model, and analyzing results to draw conclusions.

The modern reciprocating diesel engine exhibits many complex features and
phenomena, perhaps more complex than any other mechanical device.
Although the Internal Combustion Engine has gone through over a century
of very ambitious development, the margin for improvement can still be
considered as relatively wide. In this project, a modest attempt has been
made to simulate and predict the various phenomena occurring during
combustion.
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a relatively late entrant in today’s
modelling and simulation scenario mainly because most fluid dynamic
phenomena have not still been fully understood or are extremely complex so
as to satisfy a single model under varying conditions.

CFD modelling in Internal Combustion Engines started less than two

decades ago when the tools for this began to appear. It is well known that the
engine is considered as a heat pump. But mere numerical modelling based
on thermodynamic phenomena has not given sufficient results. CFD codes
today incorporate thermodynamic and fluid dynamic phenomena, making
results more accurate and easier to validate. The primary focus of this
investigation is the fuel spray and combustion processes occurring in a
diesel engine.

The aim of this project is to produce accurate and validated results which
lead to a deeper understanding of combustion which enables to identify
problem areas and suggest modification which enable an increase in fuel
economy and a decrease in pollutant emissions. Since control over
combustion is a key phenomena, it is necessary to simulate the combustion
process in detail.
This project also focuses on is Mass Concentration of Fuel in Cylinder and
Combustion Patterns in Cylinder, both of which heavily influence turbulence
patterns in the Cylinder of a Diesel Engine.
