HW2

This document contains a cellular communication homework assignment with 5 questions: 1. Prove properties of distributions of functions of independent Gaussian random variables. 2. Find the path loss exponent that minimizes MSE between an empirical path loss model and measurements for an indoor 900MHz system. 3. Calculate received SNR and outage probability for mobile stations at distances from a base station, and find the cell radius with a given outage probability. 4. Cellular Communication HW#2

Due date: 31 Farvardin 99

1. Prove that for X and Y independent zero-mean Gaussian random variables with variance σ2 , the
distribution of Z = √X 2 + Y 2 is Rayleigh and the distribution of Z2 is exponential.

2. Consider the set of empirical measurements of 𝑃𝑟 /𝑃𝑡 given in the table below for an indoor system at
900 MHz. Find the path loss exponent 𝛾 that minimizes the MSE between the simplified model 𝑃𝑟 =
𝑑 𝛾
𝑃𝑡 𝐾 ( 𝑑0 ) and the empirical dB power measurements, assuming that 𝑑0 = 1 m and 𝐾 is determined from
the free space path gain formula at this 𝑑0 . Find the received power at 150 m for the simplified path loss
model with this path loss exponent and a transmit power of 1 mW (0 dBm).

3. For the problem 2 and its model and parameters (𝐾, 𝛾 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑑0 ), let the Base Station (BS) of the cell
transmits signals with power of 100W and noise power is 1𝜇W and the least required SNR for
communication is −18 dB.
a. What is the received SNR of a Mobile Station (MS), which is 50 m far from the BS? What is the outage
probability for this MS?
b. Repeat (a) for 100 m distance between MS and BS.
c. Find the radius of the cell 𝑑𝑐 , if we assume that in 𝑑𝑐 the probability of outage is 1.

d. If in addition to path loss, a log-normal shadowing with 𝜎 2𝜓 𝑑𝐵 = 3 dB exists, what is the outage
probability for MS in 𝑑𝑐 ? What amount of power we should add is it in order to decrease the probability of
outage in 𝑑𝑐 to 0.1?

4. A mobile receiver is moving at a speed v and is receiving signals arriving along two reflected paths which
make angles θ1 and θ2 with the direction of motion. The transmitted signal is a sinusoid at frequency f.
a. Is the above information enough for estimating I. the coherence time 𝑇𝑐 ; II. the coherence bandwidth 𝑊𝑐 ?
If so express them in terms of the given parameters. If not, specify what additional information would be
needed.
b. Consider an environment in which there are reflectors and scatterers in all directions from the receiver
and an environment in which they are clustered within a small angular range. Using part (a), explain how
the channel would differ in these two environments.
5. The local average power delay profile in a particular environment is
𝑛=3
10−6
𝑅𝑐 (𝜏) = ∑ 2 𝛿(𝜏 − 10−6 𝑛)
2𝑛 + 1
𝑛=0

a. Sketch the power delay profile of the channel.

b. What is the average delay spread?
c. What is the RMS delay spread of the channel?
d. If a binary digital modulated signal with a bit rate of 2 Megabits per second is applied to the channel,
will the modulation undergo flat or frequency selective fading? Explain your answer.
