I. Rationale
Every school year English teachers were conducting reading evaluation to their pupils.
They administer Pre-Test every July and Post-test every January using the given selections
from Phil-IRI to assess the reading level of each pupils. The pupils can be categorized as
independent, instructional, frustration, and non-reader in their reading level.
The problem started last three years ago based from the results of the Pre-Test and
Post-Test, there were still a lot of non-readers from Grade Three Pupils.
Implementing reading intervention can bridge the gap in our school. Through the use
the different strategies like “Big Brother and Big Sister,” Project DEAR & Drop Everything and
Dear), Pull out Method and many other strategies. Using different instructional materials
like big book, flash cards of words, vocabulary charts and story books can be a big help to
enhance the reading skills of our pupils.
The plan will be implemented starting August-March of this School Year 2016-2017, to
improve the reading level of non-readers in Grade Three especially in English.
This study aims to present Implementing Reading Intervention in English to Improve the
Reading of Non-Readers of the Grade Three pupils in Siñura Elementary School in Porac East
District, Pampanga specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What is the reading level of the Grade Three pupils who are exposed to
implementing reading intervention?
2. What is the reading level of the Grade Three pupils who are not exposed to
implementing reading intervention?
3. Is there a significant difference between the reading level of pupils who are
implementing reading intervention to those who are not?
III. Hypothesis
There is no significant difference between the reading level of grade Three pupils who are
implementing reading intervention than those who are not?
IV. Significance of the Study
The Pupils. As the center of academic system their reading level will be fun and easy. They
can comprehend what they are reading.
The Teachers. Teaching will become easier because their pupils will be able to understand
what they are reading. Discussion will become lively because the pupils can participate actively.
The Principal. May lessen the number of non-readers and number of drop-outs because
pupils can participate enthusiastically during discussion, thus may increase the performance
indicators of the school.
V. Definition of Terms
The following terms will be conceptually and alphabetically define for better understanding of
the entire study.
Controlled Group. It refers to the pupils in the study that there was no intervention made to
them.
Experimental Group. It refers to the pupils who were non-readers or low reading levels where
reading intervention was implemented to them.
Reading Intervention. This term refers to the administering different strategies to improve the
reading level of pupils like reading syllables, word, phrases, and sentences using charts, big
books, and story books.
Remedial Reading. This term refers to the implementation of different reading strategies like
Project DEAR, Big Brother and Big Sister many more and administering it after class hour.
The study will use the Experimental Method. True experimental research will be the main design
of this study since its main objective is to prove and disapprove a hypothesis mathematically,
with statistical analysis. The learners who belong to the experimental group will be staying after
class for remedial reading. They will exposed to different reading interventions like reading
syllables, word phrases, and sentences in charts, story books, big books and vocabulary words.
VII. Participants
The researcher will conduct this study to the Grade Three pupils of Siñura Elementary School –
Porac East District, Pampanga for the School Year 2016-2017.The control group will be selected
based from the results in the Pre-Test of their PHIL-IRI those who are consider as Non-Readers
will belong to this group while, the experimental group will be the pupils who obtained the
reading levels independent, instructional, and frustration.
The researcher will distribute the selections to the grade Three pupils for Pre-Test and Post-Test
for them to read. The researcher will get the scores of the pupils from the selection they read.
The data collected will be tabulated and processed using Statistical Packages for the Social
Sciences (SPSS). In order to analyze and interpret the data gathered, and the following statistical
measures will be used in identifying the reading level of the controlled group from the
experimental group.
ACTIVITIES
Controlled Group Target Period Data Needed
Self-study no reading July-March 2017 Phil-IRI scores
intervention implemented Pre-Test and Post Test
Experimental Group Target Period Data Needed
Recognition of Words July-August 2016 Number of words read in a
selection
Reading Phrases August-September 2016 Scores from PHIL-IRI Pre-Test
Reading of Paragraphs with October-November 2016 Number of paragraphs read
Comprehension skills in a selection with
comprehension
Reading of Stories with December-March 2017 Scores from PHIL-IRI Post-
comprehension skills Test
IX. Instrument
The instruments that will be used to gather data will be the selections given from PHIL-IRI. The
pupils will read the selections then they will answer the given questions.
X. Data Analysis
The data to be gathered will be analyzed statistically in order to answer the questions rose in the
study
And will be able to test the hypothesis for this particular study. The statistical instruments that
will be provided through the use of Statistical Packages for the Social Science (SPSS).
