Chapter 13 Rain, Thunder and Lightning

1. The document discusses the water cycle and different states of water. It describes evaporation, condensation, and how water circulates between oceans, atmosphere, and land. 2. Clouds are formed when water vapor condenses into water droplets. Thunder is heard after lightning because sound travels slower than light. 3. During the water cycle, water changes between solid, liquid, and gas forms through various processes like melting, freezing, vaporization, and condensation.

Month : December Lesson -13 Rain ,Thunder and Lightning

Short answer questions:

1. What are the three states of water?

Ans. The three states of water are ice, water and water vapour(steam).

2. What are the two ways in which vaporisation occurs? How are they different
from each other?
Ans. Evaporation and boiling are the two ways in which vaporisation occurs.
Evaporation is a type of vaporisation that occurs at a slow rate from the surface of a
liquid at a low temperature. On the other hand, boiling is a type of vaporisation
that occur rapidly throughout the liquid at a high temperature.

3. What is meant by boiling point?

Ans. Boiling of a liquid takes place at a particular temperature called the boiling point.
e.g.The boiling point of water is 100 degree Celsius.

4. When does water vapour condense?

Ans. Water vapour condense when it comes in contact with a cold surface.

5. How are clouds formed?

Ans.The heat of the sun evaporates water from various water bodies such as
oceans, seas, rivers, lakes etc and forms water vapour. The water vapour, being
lighter rises up and condenses to form tiny droplets of water. Many tiny droplets
combine together to form clouds.

6. Why is thunder heard a few seconds after lightning strikes?

Ans. Thunder heard a few seconds after lightning strikes as light travels faster than the
sound through air.

Long answer questions:

1. Describe how the different states of water can be interchanged?
Ans. The different states of water can be interchanged from one form to another by:
a. Melting- The process by which ice changes into water.
b. Freezing- The process by which water changes into ice .
c. Vaporisation- The process by which water changes into watervapour by boiling
or evaporation.
d. Condensation-The process by which watervapour changes into water.
Melting Evaporation
Ice Water Watervapour
Freezing Condensation
2. What is water cycle? Explain in detail with the help of a diagram.
Ans. The water cycle is a continuous cycle by which water circulates between the
earth’s oceans,atmosphere and land.
*It involves various processes such as evaporation, condensation, precipitation
and transpiration.
*During the water cycle water goes through different states-solid, liquid ,gas.
* The heat of the sun evaporates water from various water bodies such as
oceans, seas, rivers, lakes etc and forms watervapour. Plants also release
huge amounts of water vapour in the atmosphere through transpiration.
* The water vapour, being lighter rises up and condenses to form tiny
droplets of water. Many tiny droplets combine together to form clouds.
* When the clouds become too heavy and cannot hold the water drops, these
drops fall to the earth’s surface as rain, snow, sleet or hail. This is called
precipitation.
* Some rain water falls to the land and flows beneath the earth’s surface through
tiny pores in the soil and collects as ground water. This is called percolation.

3. Why does lightning occur? Why is it dangerous? What precaution should one
take during lightning strike?
Ans. Lightning occur due to sudden flow of electrical charges between clouds or
between a cloud and the ground.
Lightning can be dangerous as it can cause objects to catch fire because of
tremendous heat generated during the process .It can cause heavy damage to
trees ,buildings ,electrical and telephone lines and also humans.
Precautions to be taken during thunderstorm:
1. Do not go outdoors, stay inside an enclosed shelter.
2. Avoid using electrical devices of all types.
3. Stay away from water.
4. Do not stand under a tree or a tall tower.
5. Avoid going near wire fences ,metal pipes and rail tracks.

HOTS
1. Students activity-Paste pictures of symbols related to natural disasters.
2. Evaporation causes change of water into watervapour and condensation
causes change of watervapour into water. So, evaporation and
condensation are responsible for changing one form of water into another.
HOTS
On pg.166
● Yes, Water cycle causes continuous circulation of water between
the earth’s oceans , atmosphere and land which results in change of
weather.
● Coastal areas and marshy areas are usually humid as due to the
presence of large water bodies there is a lot of evaporation of water
into watervapour in the atmosphere.

Extra Questions:

1.Why does the frozen water bottle expand?

A. Water has a property of expanding when the temperature is below 4oC. This is called
anomalous expansion of water.

2. Naphthalene balls become small after putting in the folds of clothes after a few days.
Why?

A. Naphthalene balls turn into gaseous form directly without changing into liquid form.
This is called sublimation.
