Integration: Indenite Integrals and The Substitution Method

The document discusses integration techniques including substitution and finding the area between curves. It provides examples of evaluating indefinite integrals using substitution and finding the definite integral of functions over various domains. The document also discusses properties of even and odd functions and using them to evaluate definite integrals. It concludes with two applications of these integration techniques: one involving costs and revenues of a video game over time, and another involving inventory levels of a product over successive 3-month periods.

Substitution and Area between curves
Theorem
If g is continuous on the interval [a, b] and f is continuous on the range of g(x) = u, then

Theorem
Let f be continuous on the symmetric interval [−a, a], then
Z a Z a
If f is even, then f (x)dx = 2 f (x)dx

Application
An amusement company maintains records for each video game installed in an arcade. Suppose that C(t) and R(t)
represent the total accumulated costs and revenues (in thousands of dollars), respectively, t years after a particular game
has been installed. Suppose also that

C 0 (t) = 2 R0 (t) = 9e−0.5t

The value of t for which C 0 (t) = R0 (t) is called the useful life of the game. (A) Find the useful life of the game, to the
nearest year. (B) Find the total prot accumulated during the useful life of the game.

5
Application
A store orders 600 units of a product every 3 months. If the product is steadily depleted to 0 by the end of each 3
months, the inventory on hand I at any time t during the year is shown in the following gure:

(A) Write an inventory function (assume that it is continuous ) for the rst 3 months. [The graph is a straight line
joining (0, 600) and (3, 0).] (B) What is the average number of units on hand for a 3 -month period?
