5. DESIGN LOADS/LOADING DATA

5.1 DEAD LOAD:

As per IS: 875 (Part 1) – 1987 based on the unit weight of materials used for
structural elements and finishes
Density of mortar and plaster - 20.8 KN/m3
Density of RCC - 25.00 KN/m3
Brick masonry - 19.2 KN/m3
Density of sand - 18.00 KN/m3
Density of saturated soil - 20.00 KN/m3
Density of water - 10.00 KN/m3
Density of stainless steel - 78.50 KN/m3
Waterproofing/Landscape/Equipment - as/actual

The self-weight of the beams, shear walls and columns shall be input as
SELFWEIGHT whereas in plates, density is assumed as zero in STAAD and
external floor loads have been applied.

5.1 (a) WALL LOAD

General: (Density of Masonry*thickness of wall*(Height of wall-Depth of

Beam if any)) +Density of Plaster*(Thickness of outer plaster +Thickness of

inner plaster)*Height

250 THICK WALL: 19.2*0.25*(3.6-0.5) +20.8*(12mm + 15mm)*3.6= 16.9N/mm2

3
BUILDING CONSTRUCTION DEPARTMENT (BCD) EDMAC Engineering Consultant (I) Pvt. Ltd

125 THICK WALL: 19.2*0.125*(3.6-0.5)+20.8*(12mm+15mm)*3.6= 9.5 N/mm2

5.1 (b) SLAB DEAD LOAD

General:

(Slab Thickness*Density of RCC)+ (Thickness of floor finish*density of

Floor finish material) + (Thickness of plaster * density of plaster) +

(Partition wall loads if any) + (load for sunk if any)

150 mm Thick Slab:

(0.150*25) + (0.05*20.8) + (0.012*20.8) = 5.2 KN/m2

added to the floor load as under:

(Udl due to wall calculated as above * length of wall)/floor area

Design by Staad

The pile caps are modelled on STAAD as finite elements and the contours of moments in both
directions are extracted after analysis. The pile caps are analyzed for the following load
combinations:

 (SW OF PILE CAPS+D.L+L.L)*1.5

 (SW OF PILE CAPS+DL+LL±EQX)*1.2
 (SW OF PILE CAPS+DL+LL±EQZ)*1.2
 (SW OF PILE CAPS+DL±EQX)*1.5
 (SW OF PILE CAPS+DL±EQZ)*1.5

Spring Constant

The Pile Caps are modelled on Staad and loads are applied as nodal loads on the points of
applications.
The value of spring constant has been calculated and spring supports have been applied on the
locations of piles.
The procedure adopted for determining the spring constant value is as follows:
K = load /displacement

= 310KN/0.012m

= 26250 KN/m

Adopted value of spring constant = 26250 KN/m
