Philosophy of Mathematics

The document outlines a philosophy of mathematics that promotes conceptual understanding over rote memorization. It advocates for connecting mathematical concepts across a learning continuum, using manipulatives and multiple representations, emphasizing number sense and place value, and allowing student choice in problem-solving strategies. Rich tasks and number talks are seen as valuable practices for engagement and verbalizing mathematical thinking.

Philosophy of Mathematics

I believe that…

 Mathematics takes place on a learning continuum.

 Students should see a connection among mathematical concepts.

 Teachers should promote conceptual understanding and problem solving in

operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten and fractions,
measurement and data, and geometry.

 Students should be provided the opportunity to understand the underlying

connections between the mathematical concepts being learned and where those
ideas are found in real life.

 Math manipulatives enhance student learning by allowing them to use physical

materials to support content.

 Number sense is foundational to student understanding of mathematics.

 Teachers should use multiple ways to represent a concept while modeling

mathematics to show various strategies for students.

 There is various forms of output for students to show their understanding of

concepts including pictures, models, captions, or oral telling.

 Number talks are valuable practices for students to verbalize their mathematical
thinking in the classroom.

 Place value is essential for mathematic achievement in later areas including addition,
subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percentages.

 Rich, challenging tasks are critical for both student engagement and understanding
while supporting the content taught.

 Teachers should place emphasis on student choice in strategies use in mathematics

over correct answers.
