Assignment Week 5

Based on the details provided: 1. It would have been wise for Jan and Keith to clearly define expectations and responsibilities at the start of their collaboration, including authorship criteria. Without an agreement upfront, disputes could arise later. 2. While Keith contributed to the research, his role in writing the article was minimal. Including him as a co-author without his direct involvement in drafting the paper would be unethical, as authorship should only be given to those who made significant intellectual contributions to the published work. 3. The most ethical path forward would be for Jan to acknowledge Keith's contribution to the overall research, but publish as sole author since Keith did not substantially contribute to writing the article. 1. Is it ethically acceptable for Jan go back to his graduate work for an article to publish?
It is ethically acceptable because the work is his and also it has done by Jan himself. So
therefore, there is no barrier to his publishing the article.

2. Should Jan’s thesis supervisor be credited in some way, and if so, how?
Jan thesis SV should not be credited because the SV does not do any collaborative work with
Jan, so Jan have the right to no includes the SV in his article for fairness.

3. Should Jan acknowledge the source of the funding for this thesis research in the paper?
Jan should acknowledge the source of funding of his thesis in the paper of a token of
appreciation. It is for the readers to know where the funding come from (if this is of interest to
them) or for the funding body to know which grants of their have been used to deliver
successfully publications.

4. Is it responsible for Jan to ask Keith to help revise the article?

Yes, because they have agreed to do the research together and it is unfair for Jan to revise the
article solely. This is because, by the end of the article, Jan should acknowledge Keith as the co-
author. On the other hands, a person should be listed as the author of a paper only if that person
made a direct and substantial intellectual contribution to the design of the research, the
interpretation of the data, or the drafting of the paper.

5. How much could or should Jan and Keith have agreed upon at the start of their collaboration?
Yes, because if not they could mislead their colleagues and potentially impede progress in their
research as this will lead to an authorship conflict. There are three set of obligations of a
researcher to adhere to professional standards such as: 1. an obligation to honor the trust that
their colleagues place in them, 2. an obligation to themselves. Irresponsible conduct in research
can make it impossible to achieve a goal, 3. an obligation to act in ways that serve the public.

6. Was it either unethical or unwise for Jan to include Keith’s name as co-author?
It is unethical action because in order to avoid misunderstand between the colleagues, Jan
included Keith’s name though the contribution is minimal. It is unethical because citing a person
as an author just on the basis of seniority, family or professional relationship when none of them
contributed to the research or its writing.
