Highway Engineering Assignment No. 2
1. Explain the factors controlling Highway Alignment.
2. Define Camber, explain why it is provided. 3. Define Kerbs, give its type. 4. Derive the equation stopping sight distance, and explain the effect of gradient on same. 5. Calculate the SSD on a highway at descending gradient of 1.5 % for a design speed of 75 kmph. Assume total reaction time =2.5 sec and Coefficient of friction = 0.35 6. Do the analysis of overtaking sight distance (OSD) 7. The speed of overtaking and overtaken vehicles are 80 Kmph and 50 Kmph resp. on two way traffic road. If the acceleration of overtaking vehicle is0.99 m/s2, calculate the safe overtaking sight distance. 8. Explain and derive the equation for Super-elevation. 9. The radius of horizontal curve is 150m. The design speed is 60 Kmph. The coefficient of lateral friction is 0.15. Calculate- 1. Cant if full friction is allowed 2. The coefficient of friction if cant is avoided. 3. Equilibrium super- elevation. 10. Explain any one method of Attainment of Super elevation. 11. Explain widening of pavement on horizontal curves. 12.Explain the objective of providing Transition Curves. 13.Define: 1) Ruling Gradient 2) Limiting Gradient 3) Exceptional Gradient. Give the categories of vertical curve and give the equation for summit curve for SSD (any 2 cases) 16. A vertical Summit curve is formed at intersection of two gradient + 3 % and – 5.0 % Design the length of summit curve to provide a SSD for a design speed of 80 Kmph.
