1.0 INTRODUCTION
This design note deals with the typical design of steel composite superstructure for the module between
piers P48 - P52. The radius of curvature of the module in plan is 88.0m. The same design is also applicable
for the module between piers P44 - P48.
The Superstructure consists of six no.s of steel 'I' -girder in each span with 0.200m thick cast-in-situ
RCC slab above spaced at 2.80 m on pier P52 and 3.16 m on remaining pier (P48, P49, P50 & P51) along
the transverse direction. One End diaphragm is provided at each bearing location and five intermediate cross
beams are provided in End Spans and six intermediate cross beams are provided in Inner spans. The total
deck width of the bridge varies from 16.60m and 18.40m consisting of 2 x (7.5m to 8.4m) carriageway with
0.5m wide crash barriers on either side and 0.6m wide central median.

3.1 Introduction
In Stage-1, only steel girder is effective and the loads applied are
a) Self weight of steel girder, cross bracings and diaphragms
b) Self weight of deck slab
c) Temporary Construction load
In Stage-2, composite section (girder + deck slab) is effective and the loads applied are
d) Removal of temporary construction load
e) Super imposed dead load + surfacing load
f) Live load + wind load
g) Differential shrinkage / temperature gradient load (Serviceability Limit State only)
Longitudinal Analysis of the superstructure is done using STAAD Pro software. The superstructure is
idealised as a grillage - longitudinal members representing girders and transverse members
representing deck slab and diaphragms. The bending moments and shear forces are taken from
STAAD Post Processor.
