Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Introduction 2

INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Vienna Synchron Player!
We’re proud to present this next step in sample player development.
Like its predecessors, Vienna Instruments and Vienna Instruments PRO, this sample player will be the foundation for many
new products that feature the fantastic sound of Synchron Stage Vienna!

About Vienna Synchron Player

The Synchron Player engine is designed to manage multi-microphone recordings in a highly efficient and intuitive way.
Our main objective is to provide a quick overview of all available articulations in a tree view, with multiple tabs to edit
these articulations and to mix all available microphones with the intregrated mixer to suit all mixing situations, from
stereo to immersive surround sound formats.

The interface is both scalable and resizable, so it is retina-ready and will adapt to any screen size.

Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Installation 5

INSTALLATION
The ViennaKey

The ViennaKey is the eLicenser USB key which holds the license for your registered collections.
Instead of the ViennaKey, you can also use another eLicenser (e.g., USB keys by Steinberg or Arturia) to store your
license(s).

Registration

Situation 1 (with Activation Codes): In case you have received an email with Activation Codes, your purchased products
are already registered and assigned to your account (your products were registered at purchase online or in your music-
store).
You don't need to register any Serial Numbers! Simply connect your USB eLicenser to your computer and paste the
Activation Code(s) into the eLicenser Control Center to download your permanent licenses (click „Enter Activation Code“
in the upper left corner of the eLCC User Interface).

Situation 2: You have received a Serial Number from your dealer. In this case, please register this Serial Number in MyVSL.
You will see your Activation Code immediately; an e-mail containing this code will be sent to you as a backup.

! If you haven’t done so already, please use these Activation Codes to download your license(s) as described
in the chapter eLicenser Control Center below. You need an internet access to download your license(s).

You will download and install your sample content with the help of the Vienna Download Manager, available in
MyDownloads.
We have prepared Video Tutorials showing the registration and installation routine on screen; you can find them at our
website’s Quick Start Guides.
Moreover, Video Tutorials are available which highlight the features of your Vienna Software!

System Requirements

Vienna Synchron Player runs on PC Intel Core 2 Duo/AMD Athlon 64 X2 machines with Windows 7, 64-bit versions, and
Intel Core2Duo machines with Mac MACOS 10.10 (latest update) or higher.
As our Synchron Series products contain multiple microphone positions, you will benefit from using SSD drives and you
will need at least 8 GB of RAM available.
Take advantage of (de)activating channels in your mixer to optimize the performance (especially for live playing). This will
unload samples in the background, resulting in a lower RAM usage.

Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Installation 6

eLicenser Control Center

The eLicenser Control Center manages your licenses. Please make sure that you are using the latest version, available at
www.elicenser.net.

Remember that you need a ViennaKey (or a Steinberg or Arturia eLicenser, formerly Syncrosoft) to store your licenses on.
You should register your key with us, so that you are safe in case of damage (the first 6 or 7 digits of the key are
important, as shown on the screenshot below).

Downloading your license is simple: Make sure your ViennaKey is inserted, launch eLicenser Control Center, click on Enter
Activation Code and paste your Activation Code into the respective field (you can paste the whole code into the first
field). You will be guided through the rest of the procedure. An Internet connection has to be available for this process.

You can of course download your license on any Internet computer, in case your music computer is not connected to the
Internet.

If your license download was interrupted for any reason, please click Maintenance (in the upper right corner) – this will
complete your license download automatically!

Remember that you will need the sample content and the license of your Synchron Series products as well as the latest
Synchron Player Software installed alongside with a ViennaKey on your computer(s)!

Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Installed Programs and Files 7

INSTALLED PROGRAMS AND FILES

The Synchron Player plug-in itself will be installed in your plug-in folders. Your Programs/Applications folder will also
contain a Synchron Library Installer to enable manual installation.

macOS:

The Synchron Player Uninstaller on macOS can be used if you’d like to roll back to an earlier version.
The Vienna Synchron Player is the Standalone app of this software and can be used without any sequencer.

Additionally, the plug-ins for VST/AU/AAX will be installed in the corresponding plug-in folders (on macOS:
/Library/Audio/Plug-ins and PT).
Additionally, a virtual MIDI driver is installed, to make our MIDI Dump feature work under all circumstances.

WIN:

On Windows, you will find the Synchron Library Installer in “All programs” (click Win/Start button to find it).
The Vienna Synchron Player is the Standalone app of this software.

In case you want to install your sample content without using the Download Manager (e.g., on a networked computer
without internet connection), the Synchron Library Installer will guide you through the installation process.

Additionally, VST / AAX Plug-ins will be installed in a location of your choice.

Also, a virtual MIDI driver is installed, to make our MIDI Dump feature work under all circumstances.

Content Installation

Download Manager

Download and install the Sample Content of your Synchron Series product with the help of the Vienna Download
Manager, available in MyDownloads.

A short description of the steps to download all files is available in the column on the left side of MyDownloads.

You will be asked for a location to store the installation files. Make sure to select a target location with sufficient disk
space.
You can also specify which of the available microphone positions you want to download.
However, more microphones will provide more choice.

You will be warned if the hard disk you specified for the sample content does not provide enough free space. In that case,
please cancel the procedure and resume, specifying another hard-drive.

The Synchron Library Installer (next page) is included with the Download Manager and will start right after the download
of your sample content has finished.

Synchron Library Installer

Automatic Installation

The Synchron Library Installer integrated in your Vienna Download Manager takes care of the installation of your Synchron
Series products automatically, and will guide you through all necessary steps.

The Library Installer also lets you make your selection from the available microphone positions.

Manual Installation

In case you don’t want to use Vienna Download Manager’s integrated Library Installer, you can also start the installation
process manually.

In short words:
Start the Synchron Library Installer, point it to the “package.info” file contained in your downloaded files, and you will be
guided through the installation process.

You can find a short description in the left-hand column of MyDownloads as well as in the more detailed Download
Manager Manual.

We have also prepared Video Tutorials showing the registration and installation routines on screen; you can find them in
our website’s Quick Start Guides.

Moreover, Video Tutorials are available which highlight the features of your Vienna Symphonic Library products!

Vienna Hard Drive Installation

If you have received the Vienna Harddrive that contains your Vienna Products, all installers can be found in the root
folder of your hard-drive.

Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Stand-alone 10

STAND-ALONE
You can also use Vienna Synchron Player as a stand-alone virtual instrument.
As the Vienna Synchron Player stand-alone version is not connected to or embedded in any sequencer, you have to
configure the preferences for Audio and MIDI first.
All other features are identical with the plug-in version of Vienna Synchron Player.

Preferences

Access the Preferences for the Stand-alone version with the small wrench icon in the lower right corner:

The Audio tab lets you choose your preferred soundcard. You can set the Sample Rate and Latency of your soundcard.
The Audio Routing tab lets you assign the audio output pair, depending on your selected soundcard.

In the MIDI tab, you decide which MIDI Ports will be available for Vienna Synchron Player.
Smoothing will smooth incoming MIDI synchronization, when needed.

Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Database 11

DATABASE
Your Sample Content is assigned automatically when you install your Synchron Series products using the Download
Manager or Synchron Library Installer.
The User Presets Folder that contains all your customized presets can be assigned to a location of your choice.

macOS default location: \Your_Username/Documents\VSL\Vienna Synchron Player

Windows default location: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\VSL\Vienna Synchron Player

If you decide to move your sample content, it’s easy to keep track of the sample content data in the Database settings of
your Vienna Synchron Player.

Add and remove Volume Scan Paths with the +/- signs in the lower left corner. Changes will require a restart of you host.
Missing folders (e.g., when a hard-drive is disconnected or the name/path has changed) will be displayed in RED.

The reading speed of your harddrives is analyzed when you start the first time or whenever changes occur. The Preload
size is set accordingly, but of course you can overrule these settings, if you like.
All details of your drives are being displayed in the lower left corner (depending on the selected path).

Key Info

The Key Info provides an additional view of the mapping structure and is a free-floating window.
It shows both keyswitches and mapping information. It will be most helpful with complex mappings like in Synchron
Percussion I, where separate articulations and hits are mapped to different keys.

1) Key descriptions: Get the mapping details for the selected slot.
2) Keyswitches: Displayed on both the keyboard and the key info window, the color-coded keyswitches will make
orientation even easier.

Range Display / Adjustment

Activating the Range Display Features shows the range of the selected patch slot (in the dimension furthest to the right).
You can extend or limit the play range of the selected slot up to one octave up and down.

Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Dimension Tree View 15

DIMENSION TREE VIEW

The dimension tree view is the centerpiece of Synchron Player. Vertical rows of Slots are called Dimensions.
Dimensions can be labeled for better orientation, and factory presets are organized in a consistent way.

The highlighted slots (white frame) show the selected slots in each dimension, and you are always reading the structure
from left to right, until you get to the Patch Slot that contains the played articulation.

Depending on the Synchron Player engine settings, presets may load with disabled slots (greyed out), so that no samples
are loaded, initially.
Double-click the field to the left of the slot name to load the samples contained in a slot.

Dimensions

The controller assigned to each dimension can be chosen from various options:
Notes (chromatic), White Notes, Program Change and Dimension Controls (see
below).

Each dimension can be labeled, and keyswitches will be displayed in the color
of the dimension on the keyboard below and in the key info window.

Dimension Controllers

If 1 of the 8 available Dimension Controllers (labeled A-H) is selected for a Dimension, you can see the control knob and
the assigned MIDI Controller at the bottom of the Dimension.

Click in the field to see the available sources you can assign for the selected Dimension Control:
 Controller (MIDI CC)
 Pitch Bend
 Speed
 Velocity
 Aftertouch
 Aftertouch Release

All assigned controls are also listed in the PERFORM Tab below the tree view, where you can additionally manipulate each
controller curve.

Parallel Mode

The symbol next to the Controller switches Parallel Mode on and off.
With Parallel Mode off (white), the slots of a Dimension will be accessible separately.
With Parallel Mode on (blue), you can use the assigned controller to crossfade through the slots.

There is another option available in the EDIT tab for this important feature:

Choose whether you want the selected slot to crossfade with other cells (XFade) or whether it should always stay
available (Mix).

! TIPP: With Synchron FX Strings I, you will minimize the streaming-load a lot if you switch off Parallel Mode
whenever it is not needed.

Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Browser 21

BROWSER
Preset Browser

Synchron Series products come with ONE preset for each instrument section.
The idea is to provide you with a consistent preset design and slot structure.
To shape the sound of your instruments, check out the available Mixer Presets.

Creating User Presets

When creating your custom presets, hover over the User folder (or other subfolders) and you will see the option to create
new folders or to save the current preset (in the corresponding folder).

Hovering over a User folder provides the options to create a subfolder, save a preset, and to delete the folder with all
contained presets.
Hovering over a preset name lets you save the loaded settings over the selected preset or delete the preset (you will be
prompted for confirmation).

© 2019 Vienna Symphonic Library

Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Browser 22

Patch Browser

The Patch Browser shows the individual articulations that were recorded for your instruments.
Feel free to create your own presets from this material.
The system of those patches is best described in the corresponding Library Manual of your Synchron Series product.

MixerPreset Browser

The Mixer Preset Browser allows for a more comfortable access and
mangement of the mixer presets that are stored with each
instrument preset.
The selection of the factory presets is identical with the selection in
the MIX tab, but it will be easier to store your custom mixer presets
within the browser.

You will be reminded to store your instrument preset after you have
created a new mixer preset (with a selection whether you’d like to
save the preset in a mirrored file structure in the “User” Folder).
This way, you have all custom mixer presets accessible whenever
you open your custom instrument preset.
Other changes in your instrument preset will also be saved.

CHANNEL FX
Delay

The Delay is used to simulate echo effects and can also be employed as a sound design tool.
The effect signal can be additionally applied to a specific frequency spectrum by means of two integrated filters.

TIME: The time value determines the delay time in milliseconds.

SYNC: This function allows the "coupling" of the Time to a defined time value (Normal, Dotted, Triplets).
For example, with T16, the time function works in dotted sixteenths.
FEEDBACK: Determines how much the output signal is sent back to the input.
DAMPING: Sets a low-pass filter over the applied signal - the knob determines the frequency up to which the signal is
passed.
THINNING: Sets a high-pass filter over the applied signal - the knob determines the frequency at which the signal is passed
through.
SPREAD: Determines how much the applied signal moves in the stereo image.
0% = Normal Delay
50% = Mono Delay
100% = Ping-Pong Delay
DRY: Defines, how much amount from the original signal is audible.
WET: Defines, how much amount from the effected signal is audible.

Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Channel FX 37

Distortion

Saturator

A saturator emulates tape saturation or tape overload of a tape

machine.
By overdriving the signal one thereby ads harmonic distortions,
which can lead to beautiful, similar-sounding results.

DRIVE: Controls the signal at the input of the saturator.

This allows the signal to be overdriven and "distorted".
QUALITY: Determines the quality of the effect algorithm.
TYPE: About the Type function can be selected from different
algorithms.
MIX: This control determines how much of the effect of the signal is "mixed in".
ROLL-OFF: Lowering the high frequency components from 30,000 Hz to 20 Hz.
OUTPUT: Controls the output level of the effect.

Cabinet

With the Cabinet you can choose from five different Cabinet emulations:

Twin
1960B
Solo412
AC30
ES212

Dynamics

Compressor

The Compressor lowers the level of the input when it exceeds the threshold. The amount of attenuation is determined by
the Attenuation / Ratio and input level. When the input level goes above the threshold, attenuation is added gradually to
reduce distortion.

The compressor’s attack time determines how fast the compression is applied – this way you can sculpture the attack of
your instruments, making them softer or more aggressive.

The release time determines the time it takes the compressor to decrease the applied gain reduction. Depending on the
length of the release time you can minimize the “sonic body” of an instrument in comparison to the attack sound, or you
can apply extremely short release times to emphasize it.

ATTACK: Sets the time the compressor needs to increase the gain reduction to reach the level determined by the ratio. (0
– 300 ms).
RELEASE: The 'release phase' is the period when the compressor decreases gain reduction to the level determined by
threshold and ratio (or to zero, once the level has fallen below the threshold). (0–3000 ms).
CHARACTER: With this function you can suppress unpleasant peaks in the sonic image of the effect.
THRESHOLD: The level above which the signal is reduced. A low threshold means that a larger portion of the signal will be
processed.
RATIO: The ratio determines the input/output ratio for signals above the threshold. For example, a 3:1 ratio means that a
signal overshooting the threshold by 3 dB will leave the compressor 1 dB above the threshold (1:1 to 60:1).
SOFT KNEE: With the Soft Knee function you can slow down the compressor usage.
The full ratio will only apply as soon as there is a clearly exceedance of the threshold - this leads to a smoother transition.
MAKE-UP: Automatically compensates for gain loss in the compression based on the current threshold, ratio and attack
settings.
SIDE-CHAIN: This activates / deactivates the side chain.

© 2019 Vienna Symphonic Library

Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Channel FX 39

Expander

The Expander serves to "expand" the dynamics.

Silent signals are made quieter by using a threshold (to suppress noise in quiet areas, for example) and loud signals are
made louder.
This effect thus causes the opposite benefit of the compressor.
An expander works much like a gate, except that it cuts away the signal below the threshold, but only lowers the
expander (at least at a low ratio).

ATTACK: Determines how fast the signal will be processed at the set ratio after it suppresses the threshold.
RELEASE: Sets the amount of time it takes for the processed signal to return to the ineffective state after falling below the
threshold again.
CHARACTER: This can suppress unpleasant peaks in the sonic image of the effect.
THRESHOLD: This is the threshold below the signal is reduced.
RATIO: The ratio determines how much the signal is reduced by the threshold - a high ratio equals a noise gate.
SOFT KNEE: When using the Soft Knee function, the use of the expander slows down in the threshold area, the effect is
thereby somewhat weakened.
MAKE-UP: Serves to raise the signal above the threshold additionally.
SIDE-CHAIN: This activates / deactivates the side chain.

Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Channel FX 40

Limiter

The Limiter maximizes the apparent volume within the available dynamic range by reducing the distance between average
program levels and their associated peaks.
Just the right amount of maximization will make your signal seem loud without ever exceeding the available dynamic
range, whereas too much limiting will make your signal sound “flat” and unnatural.

ATTACK: Determines how fast the signal will be processed at the set ratio after it suppresses the threshold. Values: 0-300
ms.
RELEASE: Controls how long it takes for the limiter to recover from attenuating the signal after it has dropped below the
threshold. Values: 0–3000 ms.
CHARACTER: With this function you can suppress unpleasant peaks in the sonic image of the effect.
THRESHOLD: Threshold sets the point at which the limiter starts to affect the input signal. Lowering the threshold setting
has the effect of raising the output gain of the signal. The average level of the signal is increased while the limiter assures
that the signal will not exceed the ceiling level.
SOFT KNEE: With the Soft Knee function you can slow down the compressor usage.
The full ratio will only apply as soon as there is a clearly exceedance of the threshold - this leads to a smoother transition.
MAKE-UP: Useful to compensate for possible volume losses due to compression.
SIDE-CHAIN: This activates / deactivates the side chain.

Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Channel FX 41

Noisegate

The Noisegate serves to suppress quiet / disturbing signals.

Silent signals are stopped by a threshold (for example, to suppress noise in quiet areas).
This effect thus causes the opposite benefit of the limiter.

ATTACK: Determines how long the gate takes until it is fully open after it reaches the threshold.
RELEASE: Determines the time it takes to close the gate after it has fallen below the threshold.
The release function allows the signal that has passed through the open gate to be gradually frayed.
CHARACTER: This can suppress unpleasant peaks in the sonic image of the effect.
THRESHOLD: This is the threshold below which the gate closes and the signal stops.
SOFT KNEE: When using the Soft Knee function, the use of the gate slows down in the threshold range, the effect is
thereby somewhat weakened.
This can make opening and closing the gate much more natural.
MAKE-UP: Serves to raise the signal above the threshold additionally.
SIDE-CHAIN: This function activates / deactivates the side chain.

Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Channel FX 46

Chorus - Flanger

The Chorus - Flanger is a chorus effect, combined with a flanger.

The input signal splits into two delay lines and they get mixed together.
They interfere with the original signal and the resulting interference "moves" through the varying delay.

DELAY: This determines the time offset between the two parallel delay lines.
DEPTH: Determines how much the signal is affected by the flanger effect.
This is done by changing the amplitude of the LFO.
RATE: This sets the speed at which the flanger operates.
The rate is determined by the oscillation speed of the flanger.
SPREAD: Determines how much the applied signal moves in the stereo image
SHAPE: Determines the waveform of the working LFO.
FEEDBACK: With the feedback function, the effect can be influenced even more (so-called "ringing").
This effect comes into effect by sending part of the output signal back to the input.
DAMPING: Sets a low-pass filter over the applied signal - the knob determines the frequency up to the point where the
signal is passing through.
DRY: Defines, how much amount from the original signal is audible.
WET: Defines, how much amount from the effected signal is audible.
QUALITY: Determines the quality of the effect algorithm.
SYNC: This feature allows you to "link" the rate to a defined time value (Normal, Dotted, Triplets).
For example, N16 means that the rate works in sixteenths (1/16).
INVERT FEEDBACK: This turns the feedback phase.
INVERT WET: This will rotate the phase of the effect signal.

Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Channel FX 47

Phaser

With Phaser, one signal part remains untouched and a second part is sent through several all-pass filters.

STAGES: This determines the number of stages (All-Pass Filter) that are passed through by the signal.
LOWER FREQUENCY: Lowers the low frequencies (adjustable from 20-20,000 Hz).
UPPER FREQUENCY: Lowers high frequencies (adjustable from 20-20,000 Hz).

Utility

Invert

PHASE INVERT: Turns the phases of the input signal.

CHANNEL SWAP: Swaps the left and right channels in the stereo image.

Power Pan

A very useful tool for stage positioning of instruments,

featuring real-time audio angular analysis. By collapsing the
stereo image of an audio signal, you will not lose any of its
information (which happens with “ordinary” balance faders
that simply lower the volume of one side of the signal).

CENTER: Shows panning center, in %.

WIDTH: Determines the width of the stereo signal. 100%
means full stereo width of the source.
BALANCE: Applies the settings of the assigned parameters
in%.
GAIN: Balance Gain. Balance is commonly done by adjusting gain alone.
PHASE INVERT: Turns the phases of the input signal.
PAN LAW: Determines how the signal level is affected by panning. Without compensation, the combined loudness of the
left and the right signal will be higher if a channel is panned to the center than if it is panned to one side. The Pan Law
allows for attenuation of the signal when it is panned to the center. – The optimum value depends a lot on the input
source.
Adjustable from 0 to -6 dB (0 dB actually turns off constant power panning).

Sample Delay

Sample Delay is a useful tool for creating an artificial time offset of the signal (in samples).

Vienna Synchron Player – User Manual Custom Preset Creation 54

CUSTOM PRESET CREATION

To create your own presets, please make sure to watch our Synchron Player Video Tutorials.
The process and possibilities are best explained with a few simple examples.

Preset Cloning

Once your preset is ready, you can also apply it to other instruments that are structured the same way (e.g., all sections of
Synchron Strings I).

Copy root slot (which contains all slots of an

instrument) and paste the content to a text editor.

You will see a list that contains the data for every slot. To clone an instrument structure to another instrument, you will
need to replace the abbreviation / ID / folder information throughout the document.
The structure is the same for every slot that is contained in the root slot (or any other slot).

Instrument Abbreviations / ID / folder:

1st Violins: VI-14 / 1stviolins / 01 SY 1st Violins-14
2nd Violins: VI-10 / 2ndviolins / 02 SY 2nd Violins-10
Violas: VA-8 / violas / 03 SY Violas-8
Cellos: VC-8 / cellos / 04 SY Cellos-8
Double Basses: DB-6 / basses / 05 SY Double basses-6

macOS (TextEdit): Type Command+F and activate “Replace”. Then replace the existing instrument abbreviation with the
new one, e.g., VI-14 with VC-8.
Windows (Notepad): Type Ctrl+H to get to the same Replacement option.

13) Perform the same procedure for the Instrument ID.

14) And once again for folders
15) Copy and paste text to empty root node in new instance. Done, your instrument is now available for a new section,
with identical features.
16) Keyswitches will need to be adapted if you clone violin / viola presets to cello / double bass presets (and vice-versa).
