POLICIES, STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES FOR MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION

Article I
Section 1 – INTRODUCTION
Medical Technology Education/Medical Laboratory Science Education aims to gain knowledge in the
fundamentals of medical laboratory science and to response to the demands of manpower in the
paramedical service. It consists of laboratory testing which aids in the diagnosis, detection, prognosis,
prevention, and treatment of diseases.
Section 2 – AUTHORITY TO OPERATE
For Private Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs), State universities and colleges (SUCs), and local
colleges and universities - must first secure proper authority from the Commission in accordance with
the existing rules and regulations
Section 3 – PROGRAM SPECIFICATIONS
The degree of the graduates of this program:
Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology/Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Science
Section 4 - Program Description
The Medical Technology Education aims to:
- develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills in the performance of clinical laboratory procedures
- develop leadership skills
- uphold moral and ethical values
Specific professions the graduates of this program may go into:
Clinical Laboratory Practice:
- Medical Technologists/Medical Laboratory Scientists in Hospital Laboratories, Clinics and
Sanitarium
Education:
- Faculty in colleges and universities offering Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory
Science program
Diagnostic Industry/Drug Companies Specialized Fields:
- Medico-Legal Laboratory
- Drug Testing Laboratory
- HIV/AIDS Testing Laboratory
- Information System
- Quality Management System
- Research

Section 5 – COMPETENCY STANDARDS
Graduates abovementioned must:
- collect samples, prepare specimen, determine the acceptability of samples within guidelines,
perform the test according to standard methods/techniques
- take appropriate actions to maintain accuracy and precision and to analyze quality control and
recognize implausible results
- perform accurately data gathering, processing and encoding into the computer system
- observe the principles of data security or patient confidentiality and maintain ethical standards
- possess good communication and human relation skills
- take responsibility for their own professional development or continuing education
- acquire basic management, supervision, administrative skills
Section 6 – CURRICULUM
Institutions offering this program may exercise flexibility in their curriculum. However, the subjects
below should be implemented:
General Education Courses – 84 units
Core Courses – 16 units
Professional Courses – 50 units
Research – 3 units
Seminar – 6 units
Internship – 18 units
