The following exercises are on your Be Smart Guide. Follow the number of the exercise
and its corresponding page.

I. “Remarkable Identities” : Exercise IV page 168

f ( x )=( 2 x +3 ) ( x −4 )−3 x (4−x ) and g ( x )=(3 x +4 )2−(2 x−1)2

1) Develop and reduce:

a. f ( x )
f ( x )=( 2 x +3 ) ( x −4 )−3 x ( 4−x )=2 x 2−8 x +3 x−12−12 x +3 x 2
= 5 x 2−17 x−12
b. g ( x ) = ( 3 x+ 4 )2−( 2 x−1 )2=9 x 2+24 x +16−( 4 x 2−4 x +1 )
=9 x 2+ 24 x+ 16−4 x 2+ 4 x−1
= 5 x 2+28 x +15
c. f ( x ) + g ( x )=5 x2 −17 x −12+ 5 x 2 +28 x+15=10 x 2+11 x +3
2) Verify that f (−1 ) + g (−1 )=2.
f (−1 ) + g (−1 )=10 (−1)2 +11 (−1 ) +3=10−11+ 3=−1+3=2
1) Factorize f ( x ) and g ( x )
f ( x )=( 2 x +3 ) ( x −4 )−3 x ( 4−x )=( 2 x +3 ) ( x−4 ) +3 x ( x−4 )
= ( x−4 ) [ ( 2 x−3 )+ 3 x ]=(x−4)(5 x−3)
2 2
g ( x )=( 3 x+ 4 ) −( 2 x−1 ) = [ (3 x +4 )− (2 x−1 ) ] [ ( 3 x + 4 ) + ( 2 x−1 ) ]
= [ ( 3 x+ 4 )−2 x +1 ] [ ( 3 x + 4 ) +2 x−1 ]
= ( x +5 ) (5 x−3 )
2) Write f ( x ) + g ( x ) ,as a product of two first-degree binomials (or factors).
f ( x ) + g ( x )=( x−4 ) (5 x−3 )+ ( x+5 )( 5 x−3 )
=( 5 x−3 ) ( x−4 + x+ 5 )=(5 x −3)( 2 x +1)
II. “Midpoint Theorem” : Exercise 8 page 187 : Solution is on page 193 on Guide.
III. “Equations” : Exercises 1 and 2 page 206 : Solution is on pages 208, and 209 on Guide.
