MWX Website Catalytic Converters

Mineworx is developing a new catalytic converter recycling process using EnviroLeach Technologies' solution to recover palladium and platinum from diesel catalytic converters. Their eco-friendly hydrometallurgical process aims to achieve over 90% metal recovery without smelting, filling an unmet need as less than 30% of catalytic converters are currently recycled. By focusing initially on recycling diesel catalytic converters, which contain higher quantities of palladium and platinum than gasoline converters, Mineworx seeks to gain a significant share of the catalytic converter recycling market.

Solving a Global Problem

Mineworx is taking a leading role in developing Eco-Friendly

catalytic converter recycling

Diesel Catalytic Converters, rich with PGM’s, represent a massive untapped market
Nitrogen (N2) Water Vapor (H2O)
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Honeycomb structure coated with
Palladium (Pd) and Platinum (Pt)
Known as “Clean Air Metals”

Catalytic converters provide for the

oxidation and reduction of toxic by- Carbon Monoxide (CO) Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)
products of gasoline and diesel engines Particulate Matter (PM) Hydrocarbon (HC)
into less hazardous substances
• Worldwide, Cat Converters require about 12,600,000
oz of Pd and Pt per year to meet the exhaust emission
regulations for both gasoline and diesel engines

• Pd & Pt are known as “Clean Air Metals” due to their

use as critical components in Cat Converters

• A typical gasoline auto or light truck cat converter

contains two to 12 grams of Pd and an equal amount
of Pt

• Less than 30% of the Pd & Pt in Cat Converters are

recovered every year
Catalytic Converters
• Worldwide, 90 Million catalytic converters are needed for new
vehicles each year

• There are about 1.2 Billion vehicles on the road globally

• 27 million catalytic converters become available as scrap per

year

Catalytic Converter • 80% of the world’s supply of Pd and 50% of the world’s supply
of Pt are used in cat converters annually
Recycling
• Recycling of both Pd and Pt are needed to meet demand
• The only current method to recover Pd & Pt from Cat
Converters is Smelting

• Most of the North American Cat Converter smelting is

done overseas: Europe, South Africa and Asia, resulting in
significant shipping costs

• Turn around time from smelters to the recyclers is over

180 days, with often biased reporting on metal recoveries
in favor of the smelter

Current Recycling Method • Not only do smelters have limited capabilities, they emit
excessive CO2 and toxic pollution
Diesel Catalytic Converters, represent a
massive untapped market; and a serious and
growing problem for the recycling industry

• Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOC) and Diesel Particulate Filters

(DPF) are very difficult to process.

• Most smelters and refiners now refuse to accept diesel cat

feedstock due to the trapped carbon exploding and damage to
the furnace.

• Diesel cats contain 2-5 times more Pd & Pt than

Diesel Catalytic gasoline cats
Converters
• North America has over 35% of the diesel engine
market
• Licensing agreement from EnviroLeach

Leading role in advancing Cat
Converter Recycling
• Diesel Catalytic Converters will be our entry point
into the industry
• First technology to solve the smelting stage issues with

recovery, with the only green process in the industry.

• Gain significant market share via strategic, regional

Diesel Cat Converters contain 2-5 times more plant locations.
