ABSTRACT
The industrial attachment which lasted for two months was done at Ministry of Defence, Base
Workshop at Chiringa barracks, Burma-camp, Accra; where the student had the privilege to practice at
four sections of the workshop. Due to the duration of the industrial attachment, the student was not able
to work at the other sections such as the air-condition & refrigeration section; wheel alignment &
balancing section and heavy duty section.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The intern expresses his immense gratitude and appreciation to the management and staff of the
Ministry of Defence, Base workshop, Chiringa barracks, especially to Mr. Dery Alexis, workshop
supervisor for inspection section and all the supervisors of all the sections he found himself working
under for the knowledge and discipline that they had imparted in him.

INSPECTION & SERVICING SECTION

This section is the main section the intern was assigned to. This section deals with general servicing and
inspection of the vehicles when their time is up for their periodic inspection and servicing. The vehicles that
undergo these general servicing and inspection in the workshop are Nissan, Mitsubishi, JVC and the military
vehicles such as the ‘dolphin”. The section’s duties are to do visual inspection and render periodic servicing to the
vehicles whenever they cover a distance of 5000km. the vehicles either undergo either servicing “A” or servicing
“B”, depending on the distance covered.

SERVICING “A”: this is performed when the vehicle covers a distance of 5,000km. with this, visual inspection is
performed on the vehicle to find any leakages; the air filter element is cleaned using compressed air to get the
maximum dust or dirt out of it; the primary fuel filter is also serviced by draining the dirty fuel in the filter and
washing the filter element within the filter with fuel till the fuel being drained out, is clean. The serviced fuel filter
is filled with clean fuel and then fitted back in the vehicle; the engine oil, brake fluid and power steering fluid
levels are checked. Then the next date of servicing (SERVICING “B”) is assigned for the car and pasted on the
wind screen of the vehicle and the old one is removed. The vehicle is then taken for a test drive to detect any
changes in the performance of the vehicle and if no problem, handed over to the driver (customer).

SERVICING “B”: this is performed when the vehicle covers a distance of 10,000km. With this type of servicing,
visual inspection of the vehicle is performed to check for any leakages; the primary and secondary fuel filters are
changed; the air cleaner element is serviced using compressed air and put back; the engine oil and filter are
changed; the gear box, final drive and transfer gearbox oil are checked and topped up, if necessary. Then next
date for servicing (SERVICING “A”) is assigned for the vehicle and pasted on the wind screen and the old
servicing date is removed. When all these have been done, the vehicle is taken for a test drive in order to detect
any changes in the vehicles condition and performance. And if no problem is detected and the performance and
condition meets the customer’s satisfaction, the vehicle is handed over to the customer.

Tasks performed at Inspection & servicing section from 25th June, 2010 to 1st August
2010.

DATE: 25TH JUNE -1ST AUGUST, 2010 TASK PERFORMED

‘A’ SERVICING 1. Cleaning air filter element with compressed air.
2. thoroughly washing the primary fuel filter element
with fuel, filling with clean fuel and fitting the filter
back to where it was removed.
3. checking engine oil, brake fluid and power-steering
Level and topping up if necessary.
4. Assigning a new service date for the vehicle.
‘B’ SERVICING 1. Cleaning air filter element with compressed air.
2. changing the engine oil, primary and secondary
Fuel filters, oil filter.
3. checking brake fluid, power-steering, gearbox,
Transfer gearbox and final drive oil level and
Topping up if necessary.
4. Assigning a new service date for the vehicle.
ELECTRICAL SECTION
This section works on the electrical part of the vehicles that come to the workshop when they have electrical
problems. The main electrical problems brought to this section are mostly starter, alternator and the lighting
system problems. To save time and prevent inconveniences to the worker and customer, his section has a small
parts storage room where new and tested starters, alternators and bulbs for the vehicles are kept so that one
doesn’t have to go for parts from the parts section whenever he/she needs parts for an assigned work. The major
tasks performed in this section are replacement and repairing of faulty or damaged alternators, starters and bulbs.

Tasks performed at Electrical section from 2nd August to 6th August 2010.

DATE 2nd August-6th August, 2010

Task performed 1. Removing faulty starters from vehicles.
2. Changing brushes of starter.
3. Replacing faulty starters with new ones
4. Changing broken brake light bulbs
5. Changing voltage regulator of alternator that
Overcharges the battery.
6. Fitting repaired starters and alternators back in
the vehicles where they were removed.
7. Replacing faulty oil switch
8. Changing faulty solenoid of starter.

BATTERY SECTION

This section deals with the servicing and charging of the vehicles battery. The section has a battery charging room
where twelve (12) batteries can be charged at a time, storage room for distilled water and sulphric acid and a well
ventilated area for making an electrolyte, thus, mixing of the sulphric acid and the distilled water, usually rain
water. The main tasks performed in this section are replacing of damaged batteries, charging batteries and
servicing the batteries.

Tasks performed at the battery section from 9th August to 13th August,2010
DATE 9th August-13th August, 2010
Tasks performed 1. Charging weak batteries
2. Replacing dead batteries
3. Making electrolyte
4. Servicing batteries( ones with wrong
proportion of distilled water and acid)
FUEL PUMP SECTION

This section deals with the servicing of fuel pumps and mechanical injectors and also calibration of the fuel
pumps. Two types of fuel pumps are serviced at this section; namely the rotary type and ---- type of pump. The
section has a special machine used for performing calibration and the calibration is done according to what is
written in the service manual. The section has allocated an area within the section for checking correct spray
pattern, noise, correct opening pressure and leakage of fuel injectors.

Tasks performed at Fuel pump section from 16th August to 20th August, 2010.

DATE 16th August-20th August,2010

Tasks performed 1. Servicing of fuel injectors (checking for leakages,
spray pattern, noise and pressure.
2. Adjusting wrong fuel injector pressure to the
recommended pressure.
3. Cleaning dirty injectors’ openings with a wire
brush and rinsing in fuel.

The intern had the opportunity to observe how calibration was performed.

WORKSHOP SAFETY MEASURES

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the intern under took an eight week industrial attachment at Chiringa Base Workshop in four of the
several sections of the workshop, due to the duration of the industrial attachment.
Orientation was held for all the interns who under took their industrial attachment at Chiringa Base workshop at
Burma Camp, by the personnel manager. The intern was then assigned to a specific section where he later had the
permission and opportunity to undertake further training at other sections, after spending most of his time at the
section that was assigned to him. All tasks assigned to the intern in the various sections were performed under
little or no supervision and also the intern was orally assessed weekly to find out what he has learnt and also
explain things further to the intern.
