This document discusses acceleration calculations for sea transport of a jacket structure. It defines the barge motion parameters of roll, pitch, and heave to be considered in the analysis. It then calculates the translation and angular accelerations resulting from different combinations of these barge motions. Translation accelerations are presented as horizontal and vertical acceleration factors. Angular accelerations are also calculated for roll and pitch motions based on their defined oscillation periods and amplitudes. The resulting forces on the jacket structure from these accelerations will be combined with gravity loads in further analysis.

Sea-transport loads
During sea transport, the jacket will be subjected to the action of barge motions in addition of the wind
loads.
The sea transport analysis of the jacket considers only rolling, pitching and heave effects. The other
motions such as sway, surge and yaw, will be neglected for the sea transport analyses.
Based on the Specification for Offshore Installation section 5.2.2 Transportation Engineering, the barge’s
motions to be accounted for in the transportation analyses are defined as follows:

 Roll ()  20.0° T = 10.0 seconds (full oscillation)

 Pitch ()  10.0° T = 10.0 seconds (full oscillation)
 Heave  0.2 g

1. Translation effects
Consider the translation effects of a mass located in space, resulting from inclination of the barge:

Mass m Mass m

FH
Barge centre of
rotation

FV
W

For the translation effect on the barge, the weight components parallel and perpendicular to the barge
are:
FH  W  Sin   mg 1  a heave   Sin 
FV  W  Cos    mg 1  a heave   Cos 
Considering ah = FH/m and av = FV/m, the translation effect due to the inclination of the barge can
be expressed in term of acceleration as follows:

Tangential acceleration  T   " R

Centripetal acceleration  N   ' 2 R
The angular accelerations generated by the angular motion are respectively for roll and pitch
movements:
 Roll (20.0°) Angular acceleration: ” = 7.895 deg/s²
 Pitch (10.0°) Angular acceleration: ” = 3.947 deg/s²
Sea transport resulting forces are generated using vertical and horizontal masses accelerations,
and the effect of barge motion inclination.
TOW module calculates for each mass of the structure the tangential forces resulting from either
roll or pitch. Those forces are then combined to the gravity loads.
Note that effects of centripetal acceleration are neglected.
