Phonics Lesson Template

Lesson Component Planned Instruction Time

Articulation

*Students use mirrors to look at the way their lips, tongue and
teeth move to produce the sound.

Ask students to give you a “thumbs up” if the word has the target
sound at the beginning/ “thumbs down” if it doesn’t.

Jolly Phonics Program


Look at picture scene. Ask students to find things that start with
the target sound. Write these words on the whiteboard and
underline the target sound. Discuss misconceptions.

Play Jolly Phonics song twice. The first time students listen. The
second time students sing along and use the action.
5. Teaching letter Jolly Phonics Program 12min
formation Students follow letter formation on IWB. Students hold writing
hand up and trace the letter in the air, while putting their other
hand on their shoulder (to feel movement).
On mat
 Demonstrate uppercase and lowercase letter formation using
sky/grass/ground template. Discuss features (e.g. straight lines,
curves) and starting/finishing point.
 Ask 2/3 students to practice writing the letter on the
whiteboard (flag any misconceptions).
At tables
 Students go back to tables with sky/grass/ground card,
whiteboard marker and eraser.
 Repeat formation demonstration while students practice
writing the uppercase and lowercase letter on a
sky/grass/ground card.

Practice correspondence: Say (target sound) and hold up a card


of the letter. Hold the appropriate letter card as I say sounds.
Write the letter (target sound) on your whiteboard as you say it.
