CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
Broken home occurs as a result of separation of marriage either by death or
divorce. A broken family can negatively affect all domains of your child’s development.
The effects of a broken family on a student’s development depend on numerous factors,
including the age of the student at the time of parents’ separation, and on the personality
and family relationships. Teenagers may experience some problems in their social,
emotional and educational functioning. (Green, 2019)
Family life is changing. Two-parent households are on the decline in the United
States as divorce, remarriage and cohabitation are on the rise. And families are smaller
now, both due to the growth of single-parent households and the drop in fertility. Not only
are Americans having fewer children, but the circumstances surrounding parenthood
have changed. While in the early 1960s babies typically arrived within a marriage, today
fully four-in-ten births occur to women who are single or living with a non-marital partner.
At the same time that family structures have transformed, so has the role of mothers in
the workplace – and in the home. As more moms have entered the labor force, more have
become breadwinners – in many cases, primary breadwinners – in their families. (Pew
Research Center, 2014)
A study by Margot Galang (2015) on Implication of Broken Marriages to Filipino
Children, the common reasons why Filipino couples separate include financial problems,
lack of communication, infidelity, and domestic violence. Clinical and therapists note that
children caught in the middle of parent’s animosity during separation have attention and
concentration problems, academic problems, anger issues, sleep disorders, and other
psychological, behavioral and spiritual problems.
In a study conducted in Batangas they found out that eating disorder is the most
common effect of the adolescents belonging to a broken family. Moreover, the
respondents in the study generally utilize negative coping strategies such as smoking and
alcohol abuse, while some of them engage in sports as a positive coping strategy.
(Magpantay et al., 2014)
According to the study conducted by Worldvision (2019), in Brgy. Bucana 76-A
Davao City, reasons why there are so many broken families in this barangay is because
of the following: (1) Due to the extreme financial burden they experience, some parents
abandon their spouse and children to fend for themselves; (2) Because of unemployment,
some parents migrate elsewhere to find a better job but fail to return; (3) Addiction to vices
such as alcohol lead to violence and strife; and (4) Personal irreconcilable differences,
such as personality differences and lack of ambition, lead spouses to separate.
This study hopes to help the senior high school students in Malayan Colleges
Mindanao cope the stress that they have experienced and open the mind of the school
administrators to address the problems of these students in their academic struggles.
