Effectiveness of Intervention Classes Using Project Mdas

This document outlines an action research project that aims to improve the math performance of non-numerical students at San Isidro National High School through an intervention program called "Project MDAS". It found that over 150 students had low scores in basic math operations in recent years. The project will provide intervention classes in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to 110 students identified as non-numerical. It will administer pre- and post-tests to determine if the intervention improves mean test scores and performance levels. The intervention classes will take place from July to October 2016, with monitoring and evaluation from October to November 2016.

I.Situation:

Mathematics is indeed a difficult subject considered by most students. The difficulty in

basic fundamental operations of the students urged the Mathematics Department to undertake
a possible solution through a project entitled “Project MDAS”.

“Project MDAS Motivating and Developing Arithmetic Skills” aims to develop students
interest in answering mathematical problems using the four fundamental operations thus,
identifying how non- numerates students develop their performance in Mathematics subject as
well as in dealing with real – life situations.

Performing the basic four fundamental operations considered as the spring board in
studying and learning higher Math subjects. Based on records, on the past 2 recent years it
showed that there had been a huge number of non- numerates or those students who doesn’t
perform well using four fundamental operations after conducting the window card test on
signed numbers (whole number).

The Window card test on signed number (whole numbers) conducted in Grade 7 in S.Y
2014-2015 revealed that there were 154 students who got low score in addition, 159 students
for subtraction, 150 students for multiplication and 146 for division. S.Y 2015-2016 showed that
there were 90 students who got low score in addition, 290 students for subtraction, 232
students for multiplication and 350 for division. This S.Y 2016-2017 there were 171 students
who got low score in addition, 259 students for subtraction, 203 students for multiplication and
175 for division based on the Window card test.

Based on this situation, teachers conducted another set of Window card test only in
whole numbers (not signed number). It reveals that there are 3 students who got low score in
addition, 12 students for subtraction, 53 students for multiplication and 82 for division. For a
total of 110 students and they will be the recipient of Project MDAS. The window card (DD
Card) used doesn’t need any validity test.

II. Problems:

1. Is there a significant difference between the Mean Percentage Score in pre-test and
post test results after the intervention?
2. What is the effect of the Continuous Improvement Program (MDAS) in the Performance
Level of the 38 Grade 7 Non – Numerates of San Isidro National High School?

IV.CAUSES:

Possible Cause
1. Parents lack time to assist solving basic math problems at home

Probable Causes
1. Lack of materials / references
2. Have difficulty in reading and counting numbers
3. Use concrete examples in teaching addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of
whole numbers
4. Speak and use simple and understandable English language in teaching Math

V.STRATEGIES:
 Strategies to address the problem
1. Organize math intervention Class
2. Motivating and Enhancing Pre-requisite skills
3. Apply focused math Intervention (Arithmetic Skills)
4. Take Home Activities
5. Post Test, Monitoring & Evaluation

 Statistical Treatment
1. Mean

VI. Plan of Action:

1.Pre – Implementation
 Planning and getting organize
 Conduct Pre – Test on 4 basic operation ( whole numbers )
 Checking and Consolidation of Test Results
 Identifying and profiling of non numerates (Grade 7 only)
 Planning the Intervention Plan
 Conduct meeting with the parents
 Orientation of Teacher -in - Charge for the intervention class
 Preparation of Intervention Materials
 Reproduction of intervention materials
 Development of new intervention materials
2.Implementation
 Conduct of Intervention Class (by operation)
a. Addition
b. Subtraction
c. Multiplication
d. Division

3.Post – Implementation
 Conduct Post Test (Final Monitoring)
 Evaluate Results

VII.Time Frame:
