A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer

3. Motivation
Display an inspiring picture and ask the students what they think about it. Let
one or two students stand in front and give a short speech about the picture.
B. Discussion
Speech - the expression of or the ability to express thoughts and feelings by
articulate sounds.
Types of Speeches
1. Informative Speech - An informative speech is one that intends to educate
the audience on a particular topic.
Informative Speech could describe:
Objects – these are the things that are tangible and, thus, recognized
through sight, hearing, taste, or touch; so speeches about include those
about people, places, animals, structures, etc.
Events – are happenings or occurrences, both past and present.
Concepts – are ideas, philosophies, hypotheses, and arguments, etc.
Processes – discusses how something is made or how something is done or
how something works.
2. Persuasive Speech - the speaker has a goal of convincing the audience to
accept his or her point of view. The speech is arranged in such a way as to
hopefully cause the audience to accept all or part of the expressed view.
3. Entertainment Speech (Special Occasion) – This type of speech is meant to
entertain, celebrate, commemorate, or inspire an audience. This might be a
toast, a eulogy, an introduction, or an acceptance.
4. Impromptu Speech - An impromptu speech is given with little or no
preparation, yet almost always with some advance knowledge on the topic.
When called to speak "off the cuff" on the "spur of the moment," is usually
because the speaker is quite knowledgeable about the subject. The speaker
usually does not use notes or other materials.
5. Oral Interpretation – This involves analysing a written text and sharing the
meaning with the audience (e.g you might look at a quote, song, poem, or
story and present your interpretation to the audience.
6. Motivational speeches – this seeks to inspire their listeners, and encourage
them to take action to improve their lives.
C. Activity
Play short speech videos and let the students identify which category of speech it
belongs to and let them explain why.

D. Analysis
Let the students read Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” and ask
them to analyse what type of speech it is and why.

3. How is entertainment speech entertaining?
4. How is impromptu speech impromptu?
5. How is Oral Interpretation interpretative?
6. How is Motivational Speech motivational?
E. Generalization
Recall the lesson and ask the student what they have learned from the lesson.
F. Application
The class will be divided into three groups. Each group will be given scenarios in
which they have to make a speech. The speech will be presented by either a
representative from the group or the whole group.
Scene 1. An after-dinner speech at an awards banquet in which you will honour a
team who has a winning, but not championship, record.
Scene 2. A classroom speech in which you explain how to do something.
Scene 3. A campaign speech in which you support the candidate of your choice.

Directions: Identify the types of speeches
1. Before you cook your pasta, be sure to add a teaspoon of vegetable oil in your pot of water.
2. Parents should send their children away to boarding school during their high school years.
Students will get the opportunity to learn responsibility. Parents will begin to respect the
independence of their children. Lastly, boarding school teaches students how to think more
critically without the crutch of their familiar surroundinds.
3. Jim is my best friend, so I don't know why he chose me to give the toast today. I have so many
funny stories to tell that this birthday celebration may turn into a roast.
4. As the President of the United States it is my responsibility to keep you informed about the state
of the country's economy.
5. The Fido Forever Home is speaking to end the stray dog epidemic that has hit your area.
6. Melissa and Wyatt are getting married next week. You have to write and deliver the ceremonial
speech at the reception.
7. News about the murder case in Manhattan has been released today.

9. A student council president trying to convince school administrators to allow the students to
have a dance after the final football game of the season.
10. A teenager attempting to convince her parents that she needs to be able to stay out until 11pm
instead of 10pm.
V. Assignment
Read “The Power of Introverts” by Susan Cain and identify what speech it is and
explain why.
