SEC MODULE 06 Sol

This document contains information and questions regarding prestressed concrete beams and dams. It provides details on three situations: 1) A prestressed concrete beam with a given initial prestressing force and cross section dimensions, asking for compressive stresses and maximum eccentricity. 2) A cantilever beam with given dimensions, loads, and final prestressing force, asking for stresses at specific locations. 3) A masonry dam cross section with information on hydrostatic uplift pressure distribution, asking unspecified questions. It includes diagrams, equations, and step-by-step working to arrive at solutions for stresses, moments, and eccentricity.

Given
Situation 1– A prestressed concrete beam is 250 mm wide by 450
mm deep, the initial prestressing force is 600 kN. Assume that b = 250mm d = 450mm Pi = 600kN
there is a loss of prestress of 15% at service loads.
1. What is the final compressive stress (MPa) in the beam if the Loss = 15%
prestressing force is applied at the centroid of the beam?
A. -5.33 B. -4.53 C. -4.8 D. 5.65
2. What is the final compressive stress (MPa) in the beam if the Pf = Pi − Pi Loss = 510 kN Final prestressing force
prestressing force is applied at a 100 mm below the centroid
of the beam in MPa? Part 1 If P is at the centroid, then e = 0, therefore there is no
A. -1.51 B. -12.44 C. 11.2 D. -10.58 moment about the neutral axis/ no bending stress
3. What is the maximum eccentricity (mm) at which the
prestressing force can be applied without producing tensile −Pf
stress in the beam? c = = −4.533 MPa Use Pf for final compressive
A. 100 B. 125 C. 150 D. 75 b d stress
Part 2
Since the prestress force is applied below N.A, the
compressive bending stress will be at the bottom fiber.
Solutions:
e = 100mm

Moment about N.A, M = Pf  e = 51 kN m

c = + = −10.578 MPa Answer
b d 2
b d
Part 3
Tensile stress will possibly occur at the top fiber since
the positive bending stress will occur at the top, therefore
we will equate the tensile stress to zero

b d

Situation 2– A 6-m long cantilever beam 250 m × 600 m carries a

uniformly distributed dead load of 5 kN/m (including beam
weight) and concentrated live load of 18 kN at the free end. To
prevent excessive deflection of the beam it is pretensioned
with 12-mm-diameter strands causing a final prestress of 640
kN.
4. Determine the resulting stress (MPa) at the bottom fiber at the
free end if the center of gravity of the strands coincides with
the centroid of the section.
5. Determine the resulting stress (MPa) at the top fiber at the
fixed end if the center of gravity of the strands is 100 mm
above the neutral axis of the beam.
6. Determine the eccentricity (mm) of the prestressing force at
STRESS DIAGRAMS the fixed end such that the resulting stress at the top fiber of
the beam at the fixed end is zero.
