REMEDIAL READING PROGRAM OF AWILE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Remedial reading is not in place of the core reading program and instruction
provided in the classroom, but a supplemental program to help each student progress
toward year end goals. Pupils attend approximately four times a week for small group and
individualized instruction. Teachers provide multiple opportunities to learn and apply skills
and strategies through guided reading, leveled text, and other hands-on activities to
address different learning styles
Awile Elementary school has 3 important remedial reading program which aim to
improve the reading skills of the struggling learners and readers and to support the 3 B’s
(Bawat Bata Bumabasa) program of the Department of Education
a. EARLY READING EMPOWERMENT (ERE)-In this program, children
from grades 1 to 3 and the very slow readers from grade 1 to Grade 6 work
on:

 phonemic awareness
 phonics
 fluency
 comprehension
 vocabulary

b. COMPREHENSION ACTIVITY AND READING ENHANCEMENT

(CARE)- This project is intended for the Grades 4 to 6 pupils. They are given
passages to read individually depending on the level they need. After reading,
they have to answer the questions from the selection. This is a 30-minute
reading program which is done three times a week after the last subject in the
afternoon. They are assessed twice a year through following the steps in the
Phil-Iri.
c. Drop Everything and Read project (DEAR) A daily DEAR program (Drop
Everything and Read) provides pupils with much more than a just-sit-there-
and-read experience. It gives the teacher a structured time to touch base with
each pupil over a period of time, assess progress, and target instruction.
Even more important, it gives pupils time to read what they want to read,
share what they've read, and receive the support they need for further reading
explorations and reflections. This program is done alternately with the CARE
project. Pupils are the one to choose story to read and summarize what they
have read.
