ABSTRACT

Money is important to our everyday lives to satisfy our needs that we need every

day, including the student. Every student has a responsibility to pass their requirements

(e.g. activities, lectures, seat works, projects, etc.) to get their passing grade. In

quantitative research that is conducted by researchers, we able to find out the relationship

between allowances of the students that their parents gave and the academic performance

that they need to accomplish. 50 Grade 12 students were used as the participants of this

study to find the relationship between allowance and academic performance. Simple

random sampling technique was used to find the participants of the study. Result shows

that majority of them can maintain their grades to have a passing grade in this school year

and majority of them can buy their needs in school because of the amount of money that

parents gave is enough for them. By using Pearson’s Correlation, we found out that there

has a strong relationship between allowance and academic performance.

Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

This chapter tells the history and problem of the study. It includes the background

of the study, statement of the problem, significance of the study, and the scope and

delimitation.

Background of the Study

Daily allowance is the amount of money that student has and it is the basis to buy

the needs of student (Sollano, Duhaylongsod, Aviso, & Moneva, 2018). Parents are

responsible in giving enough resources to their children such as monetary resource for

their needs, personally and academically. The allowance that their parents gave may

depend on the satisfaction of their children. As the child grows, the expenses are growing

bigger that their parents need to learn how to budget and spend their money in times they

need it. Education is one of the important aspects that not only to improve their skills and

knowledge, but it is also helping them to improve one's nation (Kapur, 2018). It is one of

our parent’s treasure that we passed to our children and we promised to our parents that

we need to finish our study and to see the diploma that you receive and give it to our

parents that serve as the reward to their hard work.

6
BUNSURAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
However, socio-economic status may also directly affect the academic

performance in school that parents need to equip their children with support, physically,

emotionally, and mentally. Having a lack of resources may also have a negative effect of

the student and affects the life of a student, especially their academic performance in

school.

In her study, 60% are associated with their academic performance who works in

more than 20 hours. 32% and 36% of them are concerned in their academic performance

and 27% and 34% of them did not afford to buy academic materials because of the cost

(Grasgreen, 2012). According to OECD (2017), student's performance in their financial

literacy may also relate in their overall ability that may get like discussing in their parents

and their performance.

Money cannot be removed in many literatures because of the importance in

student’s life and also the key to their success. Therefore, this topic needs to find more

information about the allowance and academic performance and find out the relationship

between the allowance and academic performance.

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between the allowance

and academic performance and how these two variables affect the life of the student.

7
BUNSURAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Statement of the Problem

This research study aims to assess the relationship between student allowance and

academic performance of Grade 12 students in Bunsuran National High School.

Hence, this study addresses the following questions in this study:

1. How much allowance that parents gave to their children?

2. What are the levels of their academic performance to students?

3. Is there a relationship between allowance and academic performance?

Significance of the Study

This study is significant for the one who benefit this study to find out the

relationship between the allowance and academic performance in Grade 12 students of

Bunsuran National High School in the S.Y. 2019-2020.

Hence, this study will benefit the following:

Teachers: This study will help them to enlighten the minds of students and give the

information about the relationship between the allowance and academic performance.

Students: This study will help them to further understand the relationship between the

allowance and academic performance.

Parents: This study will give the insight and information about the money and the

importance of education to their children.

8
BUNSURAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Future Researchers: This study may use it to their study and also serve as their reference

in their study.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is limited and conducted only at Bunsuran National High School in the

first semester of the School Year 2019-2020. This study surveyed 50 respondents of

Grade 12 students to know the relationship between allowance and academic

performance.

Chapter 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter reviews and presents the related study, related literature, and

related theory in a study.

Related Theories

Wahlberg (1978) introduces his theory, the Theory of Educational Productivity.

According to his theory, educational process goals and achievement goals must be

included to fulfill the effectiveness of the study. Self-Determination Theory by Deci &

Ryan (2008) is a theory that focuses on interacting in the social environment that finds the

psychological needs of a person.

Related Studies

According to Muthoni (2013), having single parenthood would have a negative

relationship with academic performance and a family quality time of their children in

getting their achievement in their school. In their study, students budget their money as

delimits to get their wants and needs (Legaspi, Ricalde, & Villa, 2014). In their study,

they concluded that socio-economic status can affect their levels of academic

achievement due to low income from their parents (Adzido, Dzogbede, Ahiave, &

Dorkpah, 2015). In contrast, being in low socio-economic class is not an excuse for

10
BUNSURAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
having a better academic performance (Adzido et al, 2015; Nani, Edward, Emmanuel &

Kwashie, 2016) According to Wool, Fermanich, & Reichardt (2015), student’s poverty

falls in with low academic attainment and other challenges in school that may be

encountered by students. According to Razafimahasolo, Borromeo, Sausa, Carpizo, &

Sabado (2016), when financial literacy is poor, the academic performance will suffer that

will predict the level of stress and academic performance of the student. Abesamis (2014)

concluded that the amount of allowance of the student that their parents gave is based on

the academic performance of the student. According to Schmeiser, Stoddard & Urban

(2015), having an intervention credit and higher GPAs in their current semester does not

affect their academic performance. In his study, he concluded that the higher intrinsic

motivation would be related to higher financial responsibility percentage (Weaver, 2013).

In their study, results show that socio-economic status and parents' education have an

effect in their academic achievement, including English and Mathematics (Farooq,

Chaudhry, Shafiq, & Berhanu, 2011). According to Sasaki, Diaz, and Brazal (2018), as

their grades are promoted to get higher, their academic performance decreases as the

Grade 10 students decrease their completion rate. According to Opoku (2015), students

are less knowledgeable in terms of their financial planning that leads into stress and may

affect the personal life of a student/his performance. Dumaran, Zamora, Heramil, and

Guirit (2015) concluded that poverty can affect their academic level due to lack of

resources that they need, personally or material. According to Kim, LaTaillade, and Kim

(2011), communicating with parents has a positive effect in children’s saving for their

11
BUNSURAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
future, schooling, and donating to charities. According to Nnamani, Dikko, & Kinta

(2014), financial status may depends on the source of income that they get that self-

sponsored students are satisfied than they get from their parents or in scholarship grant. In

their study, they concluded that the respondents are financially literate but they did not

exert an effort to save their money in their future (Pillai, Carlo, & D’souza, 2010).

Conceptual Framework

Student’s Academic
Allowance Performance

This diagram shows the relationship between the student’s allowance and

the academic performance of a student. The independent variable is the student’s

allowance that is needed by a student to satisfy the needs in school. The dependent

variable is the academic performance, which needs to show the relationship in the given

variable.

The Hypothesis of the Study

HO/HO: There is no relationship between the student’s allowance and academic

performance

12
BUNSURAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
H1/HA: There is a relationship between the student’s allowance and academic

performance

Definition of Terms

Academic Performance – is an extent to which a student, teacher, or institution has

achieved their short or long term educational goals

Money - is a thing that used to pay goods or services that you get

Allowance –the amount of money that is given to someone regularly

Student – a person who studied in school

Socio-economic Class – an income-based division where a person belongs to

METHODOLOGIES OF RESEARCH

Research Design

A research design guides the research that you conducted and may be valid if the

conclusion is accurate (Akhtar, 2016). The researchers use correlational research design

to determine the relationship between the daily allowance of a student and their academic

performance. The correlational research design can be used to determine the relationship

among variables and predicts current data and knowledge (Curtis, Comiskey, &

Dempsey, n.d.).

Population and Sample

The population of the study can be used includes the Grade 12 students of

Bunsuran National High School with the respondents of 50 students.

Sampling Techniques

The sampling technique can be used is the Simple Random Sampling Technique,

where we select the respondents equally and randomly that the respondents will give a

chance to be the respondents in this study.

14
BUNSURAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Research Instrument

Survey questionnaires that are made by researchers can be used in collecting data

from the Grade 12 students. Each questionnaire contains 4 questions that can be

answerable by students to be given in 50 respondents in Grade 12 students and they give

time to answer the given questionnaire.

Data Gathering Procedure

To collect the data, first, we validate the questionnaire that will given by the

respondents to the adviser to start the survey. Second, we ask permission to the adviser to

start the survey and distribute it to the student and give a time to answer the survey.

Lastly, they give it to the researchers and we will start to gather data and count the

questions that they answered.

Statistical Treatment

The data can be treated to interpret the data is to use Pearson Correlation Statistics

and Frequency Distribution. The Pearson Correlation measures the existence of p-value

and strengths of r between -1 to +1 in a linear relationship between two variables

(Samuels & Gilchrist, 2014).

∑=50 ∑=50 ∑=750 ∑=768
N=5 𝑟 = 0.67 𝑟 2 = 0.45 p=0.273868<0.05
From the data gathered from the questions 1 and 3, Pearson Correlation Statistics
has been used to determine the relationship between two variables. The Pearson
Correlation Statistics is the test statistics used to measure the relationship between two
variables (Statistics Solutions, 2014).
Using Pearson Correlation Statistics, the value of r is 0.67, which means that there
has a strong positive relationship between the two variables and the p value is 0.27<0.05
which means that there is a higher significance between the two variables.
From the findings, the null hypothesis “There is no significant relationship
between allowance and academic performance” is rejected. Hence, the alternative
hypothesis can be drawn, which states that there is a relationship between student's
allowance and their academic performance.

19
BUNSURAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Chapter 5

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the conclusions and recommendations from the study.

Conclusion

From the study that conducted, here are the conclusions that are made:

1. Of all the information that gets on the study, majority of them can maintain

their passing grade that they need to graduate in this school year. Majority of

them can buy their needs in school because of the money that they received

from their parents is enough for them to buy.

2. In the 4th question, majority of them agree that lack of allowance/finance can

affect the educational attainment of the person that may get.

3. By using Pearson’s Correlation to determine the relationship between the two

variables, it was found out that there was a strong positive relationship

between the two variables.

20
BUNSURAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Recommendation

From the study that conducted, here are the recommendations that we give:

1. Parents should give enough money for their children to buy their needs in school.

2. Students should know how to budget their money, so that they have money left in

their pocket, or save money.

3. Teachers and parents should give the importance of the money to their children

and teach them how to budget and save their money at their early age.

4. Researchers should find the research design that fits in their research topic and

provide budget in their research.

5. And the best recommendation that we give to the researchers, listen to their

teachers to gain more knowledge and have a communication and cooperation to

their teammates to finish the research paper easily.
