1 GENERAL INTRODUCTION

This report is prepared for Building site at Arjun Chaupari Gaunpalika, Syangja as per the
requirement of client by Traceable Measurements Pvt. Ltd., Lalitpur, Nepal for the Geo-
Technical Investigation Works of Proposed Building site.
1.1 Background

The main objective of this Soil Investigation is to explain geotechnical characteristics of the sub-
soil strata,

(i) To express the engineering properties of the sub-soil

(ii) To confirm the value of bearing capacity of the soil.

1.2 General Geology, Geomorphology and Seismicity

The site is located at Kathmandu district in the lesser Himalayan region of Nepal, which is situated
between main boundary thrust and main central thrust. This area consists of sand and clays. So,
from the point of bearing capacity this place is considered as in medium condition.

2 OBJECTIVES
The main objective of this investigation is to explore geotechnical characteristics of the sub–soil
strata,

(i) to assess the engineering properties of the sub-soil;

(ii) to confirm the assumed value of bearing capacity of the ground strata during design of
foundation, and
(iii) To confirm the design parameters to be used during the detailed design of the
foundation of the proposed site.

3 Scope of Investigation
Three bore holes up to 12 m are made with DCPT in 1.5 m interval and possible sampling is done
and tested in lab for strength parameters and index properties.

Main scopes of the investigation are:

i. To find out genetic background of the soil.

ii. To collect the engineering and geotechnical properties of soil.
iii. To design the foundation for Building.
iv. To identify slope stability problems, if any, at that site as well.

1
Soil investigation Report of Proposed Building site at Arjun Chaupari Gaunpalika, Syangja.
4 Methodology

The following are the methodology adopted to meet the objectives.

4.1 Field Tests

The DCPT is done to find the strength of soil in field at every interval of 1.5 m in each BH.

Standard Penetration Tests: It consists of driving a Cone with apex angle of 600 into the soil at
the base of borehole. Driving is accomplished by a drop of hammer weighing 63.5 kg falling freely
through a height of 750 mm onto the drive head. Number of blows for 300mm penetration is
recorded as cone resistance, Nc.. The cone is driven till refusal or up to required depth.

4.2 Sampling
i. Disturbed sample:
Disturbed sample were collected from the split spoon sampler after conducting SPT.

Before any sample was taken, the borehole was cleaned up of loose disturbed soil deposited during
boring operation. The samples obtained by boring and in the SPT tubes were preserved as
representative disturbed samples for finding out index properties. The samples thus obtained were
placed in airtight double plastic bags, labeled properly for identification and transported to the lab
for analysis.

ii. Undisturbed sample

Undisturbed sample are extracted by means of thin wall tube (Shelby tube). The tubes
are pushed into the ground and the samples are recovered mechanically. The tube are
sealed with wax and wrapped with airtight polyethene sheets and then bound by
adhesive tapes and properly labelled. The tubes were properly packed in a wooden box
so as to minimize the disturbances during transportation to the laboratory and avoided
the changes of moisture content of sample. These sample are used for the determination
of the strength and consolidation parameters.

4.3 Ground Water Table

Prediction of depth of Ground water table needs the installation of piezometer and regular
monitoring of those for at least a year. Since, the time frame and the installation are beyond the
scope of work. Visual examination was performed to find the depth. Ground Water Table (GWT)
was not found up to test depth.

4.4 Laboratory Tests

Disturbed and Undisturbed samples collected in core boxes, were transported to lab in Katmandu
for the following tests as per the conformity specified on IS codes.

SN Type of Test IS Code Referred Remarks

1 Bulk and Dry Density By calculations

2 Moisture Content IS:2720(Part-2)-1992

3 Grain Size/ Hydrometer analysis IS:2720(Part-4)-1992

6 Unconfined Compression Test of soil IS:2720(Part-10)-1992

7 Drained Direct Shear Test IS:2720(Part-13)-1992

4.5 Strata Analysis

The site area is found of layered with Sand and Clay up to test depth.

4.6 Bearing Capacity Analysis

4.6.1 Depth of Foundation

Strata of site consists Poorly Graded gravel up to test depth, so it is good soil from bearing capacity
consideration. Hence, shallow foundation is considered for SBC calculation, so that the designer
can choose the depth according to capacity required.

4.6.2 Bearing Capacity of Soil

The stratum is poorly graded gravel; the computation of bearing capacity of the strata for
foundation is derived from the Nc value obtained in field and lab tests.

3
Soil investigation Report of Proposed Building site at Arjun Chaupari Gaunpalika, Syangja.

4.6.3 Stress distribution in Soils

The Boussinesq's equation can be used to get stress distribution analysis for stress at depths below
the foundation level.

L = 8.0 m,

B = 8.0 m

L/B = 1.0

For square footing the effective pressure below B; (depth equal to width of footing, 2.0 m, or 8 m
below GL) below the foundation bed, the remaining pressure is reduce about 1/3 rd of total value.

The investigation work is to 15 m. The stress distribution at a depth of 12 m below ground level is
only 1/3rd of stress developed at the foundation level and seems very low. So there will not be any
major geotechnical changes in the strata below the depth of investigation.

4.7 Bearing Capacity Calculation

4.7.1 Bearing capacity From In-situ Test

Correction of N value from SPT

Overburden Correction

For overburden, as suggested by Peck et.al. (1974).

Ncorr = 0.77 Nrec log (2000/v')

Where, v' = Effective Overburden pressure (kN/m2)

 N rec = SPT value Recorded

Dilatancy Correction

Terzaghi and Peak (1976) give correction for water pressure.

If, Nrec ≤ 15, then Ncorr= Nrec

4
Soil investigation Report of Proposed Building site at Arjun Chaupari Gaunpalika, Syangja.
If Nrec ≥ 15, then Ncorr= 15+1/2(Nrcc – 15)

Then for bearing capacity analysis Ncorr is used as the N in the Correlation provided by different
researcher.

4.8 Allowable Bearing Pressure

The allowable bearing pressure (qa) is the maximum pressure that can be imposed on the
foundation soil taking into consideration the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil and the tolerable
settlement of the structure. Analysis to determine the ultimate bearing capacity and the pressure
corresponding to a specified maximum settlement were performed and the minimum pressure
obtained from the two analyses were adopted as the allowable bearing pressure.
Allowable Bearing Pressure based on Ultimate Bearing Capacity
The allowable bearing pressure (qa) is the maximum pressure that can be imposed on the
foundation soil taking into consideration the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil and the tolerable
settlement of the structure. Analysis to determine the ultimate bearing capacity and the pressure
corresponding to a specified maximum settlement were performed and the minimum pressure
obtained from the two analyses were adopted as the allowable bearing pressure.

Bearing capacity from shear failure criteria

For cohesion less soil the allowable bearing capacity is analyzed using the N-values from SPT
results. Empirical formula of Teng (1988) applicable for this type of soils has been used to obtain
the allowable bearing pressure with safety factor equal to 3.

Bearing Capacity of Mat Foundation

Cohesion less Soil

In cohesion less soil a mat foundation does not fail in shear. For example, the bearing capacity of
a raft foundation having a width of 6 m, and founded to a depth of 3 m in a sand deposit having
relative density corresponding to SPT N-value of 10 is about 700 kN/m2 which is extremely high.
In such case, the foundation may experience excessive settlement or even fail before attaining a
bearing pressure of the order cited above. This means that the bearing capacity of raft foundation

5
Soil investigation Report of Proposed Building site at Arjun Chaupari Gaunpalika, Syangja.
in sands is governed by settlement except for the case where the sand deposit is very loose i.e. the
corrected SPT value is less than 5.

Most of the structures in sands can tolerate a differential settlement of about 3/4 of the maximum
permissible settlement. This fact has been the basis for the design of shallow footings in sands.
Compared to spread footings the differential settlement in a mat foundation is much more reduced
as the mat bridges over the loose pockets and lenses of a soil deposit. It has been found that, for
the same loading intensity and soil condition, the differential settlement in a mat foundation is
about 1/2 than that of a spread foundation. This fact suggests that the maximum settlement or
healing pressure in the case of the mat foundation can be taken as the double of the value assigned
to the spread foundation.

As per Teng (1962) the safe bearing capacity can be obtained from the results of SPT test.

From shear failure criteria, the net safe bearing capacity is given by:

qns = 0.02N2BRW1 + 0.06(100 + B2)DfRW2

From settlement criteria of 25 mm the safe bearing pressure is,

qna = 1.75(N-3)RW1

Where, B = smaller dimension of the footing

Df = Depth of foundation

N = corrected SPT Value

RW1, RW2 = water table correction factors

Where, qns and qna are in ton/m2

It has been found that the Teng’s equation for bearing capacity based on allowable settlement is
conservative and hence it is suggested to use the relation suggested by Peck et al (1974). The
relation is:

qna = 22RWN

6
Soil investigation Report of Proposed Building site at Arjun Chaupari Gaunpalika, Syangja.
The above equation is applicable for . If the value of N after proper correction is
less than 5 the raft would not be feasible. The sand is either compacted or a deep foundation is
provided. For N values greater than 50, the above equation gives conservative results. The value
of qna is for 50 mm allowable settlement, for other values of allowable settlement a linear
interpolation is to be done.

Cohesive Soil

In cohesive soil the net ultimate beating capacity on the basis of shear failure criteria is
determined by Skempton’s equation, which is:

Where, Nc is the bearing capacity factor for a strip footing at surface and is taken as 5. C u is the
undrained shear strength, Df, B and L are depth, width and length of footing respectively. The
safe bearing capacity is given by:

Where, F is the factor of safety. The factor of safety should neither be less than 3 for normal
loading condition and 2 for extreme loading condition.

The quantity in the above equation is the pressure at the elevation of the base of the foundation in
excess of that exerted by surrounding surcharge. If Q be the total load imposed at the base of the
raft due to dead load and live load, the gross pressure at the base is Q/A , Where A is the area of
the raft.

In terms of net bearing capacity the gross pressure is,

Where is the unit weight of the soil and Df is the depth of foundation. Thus we can write the net
allowable bearing pressure as:

7
Soil investigation Report of Proposed Building site at Arjun Chaupari Gaunpalika, Syangja.

Hence the factor of safety can be written as:

8

5 OBSERVATIONS AND RESULTS

5.1 Field Investigation Results

Logging of the bore holes were carried out at the site during boring period. The logs were
reconfirmed and suitably corrected based on the laboratory test results. The logs of the boreholes
are provided in annexes.

Measured SPT values ranges from 3 to 30. Measured value shows that the layers are soft to medium
in state.

5.2 Laboratory Investigation Results

5.2.1 Index Properties

The results of physical and index properties of soil samples collected from various depths are
presented in the attached summary sheet.

The grain size distribution curves of soil sample are classified as USCS Soil Classification System.
As per USCS Soil Classification System most of the soils are in SP and CH group.

5.3 Settlement
For heavier and important structure consolidation settlement should be predicted by the following
equation.

SOc = ∑ Hi * (Cc/(1+eo) log {(p0 + ∆p)/ p0}

Where, SOc = long term settlement, cm

Hi = thickness of each layer

Po = effective overburden pressure before load application

∆p = the excess pressure due to superposition of load

Cc = Compression index

eo = initial void Ratio

Then, Total settlement (Sc) = β* SOc

Where, β = average pore pressure coefficient

8 RECOMMENDATION

i. Report provides Bearing Capacity for variable depth and width for Mat foundation and
variable length of 0.5m pile foundation. The suitable depth of suitable foundation can be
selected based on the load from structure.
ii. Make block failure analysis of group pile after design of pile.
iii. The foundation design engineer does not need to strictly follow the depth and dimension
of foundation selected in the bearing capacity analysis of this report. Designer is free to
select any other foundation and depth depending upon the load from structure. Therefore,
once the size and depth of the foundation is finalized the calculations may need to be
refined during design phase based on the parameters obtained from this investigation.
iv. Care should be taken for the following during the excavation and construction of structure.
 Slope of excavation should be maintained about 450 to prevent the slope from
collapsing during the excavation period.
 Presence of seepage water and consideration of probable rise in water table in
monsoon, sidefall is eminent. So, at the time of construction of foundation, it is
recommended to design the appropriate site protection measures based on
properties as obtained on this report.
 Any loose pockets below the foundation as well as the backfilling behind the
abutment/road approach should be filled with approved granular fill in layers. (15-
30 cm) and compacted adequately to 95% of maximum dry density.
 During excavation near to hill slope (>300) as well as near to the steep valley,
stability of slope should be evaluated before the excavation by contractor.
 Excavation of last 30 cm to founding level should be inspected by an experienced
geotechnical engineer before the blending of lean concrete. If the sub soil condition
is found different than originally anticipated, additional investigation or redesign
of foundation should be carried out.
